Both Glaus and Rolen agreed to waive their no-trade clauses in order to complete the deal, which is pending physicals. The medical exams are expected to take place on Monday and an official announcement could come as early as Monday or Tuesday.

The more I think about this move, the more I like it.
Glaus and Rolen are both injury prone in different ways. Rolen has a bad shoulder. Glaus has a bad...everything. The guy is hampered by a different injury every few months. At least Rolen has the potential for shoulder surgery to be effective and have him stay healthy for a full season. With Glaus there's almost no chance that another random injury doesn't come up and hamper him every couple months.
Rolen has a better bat when healthy. The only thing Glaus has on him in HR power, but the Jays already have the same player in Thomas.
The Jays should have a look at the Wild Card this year. They would've last year, but their entire offense basically had career low years.

Rolen has been hurt for the past two seasons. The bad blood with La Russa came about largely when he was benched in the WS for Speizo after initially hurting his shoulder, so it may be more of an issue than just getting it fixed with this one surgery.
I still don't like the deal from the Cards side but I wouldn't epxect to get the .290-35-120 guy in rolen surgery or not. His struggles were not solely because of the shoulder.
Still better than a roider with injury problems though.

I like the trade. Foot injuries for someone as big as Glaus tend to consistently be re-aggravated. Rolen's shoulder injury in 2005 was a torn labrum that occured in a on-field collision but he managed to come back in 2006 and hit .296/.369/.518 with 22 homers and 95 RBI's in 142 games. In 2007, he has surgery to clean up some scar tissue that had developed in the shoulder which caused him to miss September. Other then that he has been healthy his whole career. I think a new clubhouse is going to really invigorate Mr. Rolen and I am looking forward to a great season from him. Good move for both teams.

I don't know about it being "very good", but it's more of a sideways trade. Glaus is a high risk, high return player. Rolen, given his current situation, is also fairly high risk but his return is a bit less. Defensively, personally, I could care less about what Rolen brings to the table in comparison to Glaus simply because Glaus didn't screw up royally on every play, so IMO, the incremental difference between the two players will not be noticed that much. What I'm more concerned is who will have the better average? If Rolen can hit .300, it'll be a good move by JP, if not, it's just a sideways deal. Now this might sound odd, but it would have been nice if JP sent Glaus to whomever for a 3rd string starter and then found a way to get Brandon Inge from Detroit. That would have been a more necessary return for Glaus.

Personally I am in the camp that this is a very good trade by the Jays. Glaus had to be moved with his injuries problems the Artificial turf would only cause problems. As for Rolen, he is a good hitter has always produced the only difference he does not have the power that Glaus has.
As for Defense this is a big time difference.... Sure Glaus did not make lots of errors but he is also quite slow. Therefore he would not make the plays that a fielder like Rolen can make..... Its like comparing an average second baseman to a gold glove second baseman..... There is a large difference....
Of course both players come with lots of risk.....

Speaking of gold glove second basemen (should have been at least). Is any else extremely excited to watch Aaron Hill this year? His consistent improvement over the past few seasons both at the plate and in the field have be impressive to say the least. Really hoping he manages to at least match his plate production last season with a bump up in OBP. Hope he is a Blue Jay for years to come.

Definitely am! He's been in my pool for the past year and a half, and I'm definitely hoping he can reproduce those numbers. Last year he carried my lousy team, and he's still my property, so hopefully this upcoming year will be the same.

Left-hander Scott Downs agreed Thursday to a US$10-million, three-year contract with the Toronto Blue Jays after a breakout season in which he had a 2.17 ERA.
Downs went 4-2 in 81 relief appearances, tied for the AL lead. He struck out 57 in 58 innings and walked just 24.
Downs gets $2.25 million this year, $3.75 million next year and $4 million in 2010. He made $1.05 million last season.
Toronto also agreed to a $2.65 million, two-year contract with infielder Marco Scutaro and one-year contracts with right-hander Jason Frasor ($1,125,000), and left-handers Gustavo Chacin ($725,000) and Brian Tallet ($640,000).
Outfielder Alex Rios is Toronto's last remaining player in arbitration

Lofton eh? Would that put Reed back into a platoon situation?

Good to see them locking down the pitching staff. As for Alex Rios, what happened to all the trade talk a few months back?

I believe he was going to be in a platoon situation with Matt Stairs already.
I have not read any rumours about Lofton signing with the Jays, but if that happened I would think the Jays are looking to move one of the current Outfielders as carrying 5 outfielders is to many IMO.

Especially with Lind knocking on the door in the minors. Lofton's name came up earlier in the off season when the Jays were looking at dealing Rios for Lincecum.
If Rios happens to be on the move, that is the only way Lofton gets signed.

Either way, a good signing. A heck of a lot better than Sal Fasano backing up Zaun.
