Ehhh...going camping in the bushes for a week and having to dig a hole gives you an appreciation for a working toilet. I think there's a fundamental differenct between vacation and travelling. When I go travelling I want to get involved with the culture, people, etc. But let's be honest, that's a lot of work and can really drain you. If I'm on vacation I want to relax and recharge my body so I'm not totally stressed when I go back to work.

Sounds like something some PVC plumbing could fix!
I also agree that those all inclusive vacations to resorts are over rated. Sure they're nice and relaxing and you can eat and drink all you want. But travelling and staying at a hostel and talking to local people or meeting others from other countries is a really cool experience. Certainly not as comfortable, but much more memorable.

It depends really.... if you with a big group of people those All-inclusives are great because if you stuck there in the everyone standing around I dont know what to do next spot... you can just F-off and find something to do.
Hostels are great when you travelling in a small group or by yourself as it is quite easy to make new friends.
I would have to agree that travelling to underprivaleged countries and doing charity work is underrated... not enough people do it. I am not saying you are going to come back a completely different person, but puts you into a frame of reference in regards to the rest of the world. Knocks you off your high-horse so to speak.
Personally... i alternate... one for me, one for them.

You don't need to "teach" the Bible, Qur'an, etc. to eliminate racism or learn about each other.

Unless you're talking about the Starbuck's coffee 'culture.' Then yes, thats crap, coffee is a drink, not a culture, its tough for some to accept, but thats tough, they'll have to deal with it.
