Rotoworld reports Jays have upped their offer to Meche to 4/40 million.
This is ugly. Very ugly.

For the Jays it's basically a catch 22, if they outbid to get Meche they payed too much, but if they come down with injurys next year and they have to throw in Joe Smoe AAA guy, people will be complaining about why the Jays didn't grab a solid #4 guy in the offseason.
Fact is contract #'s aside, the Jays need starting pitching. Right now with the market the way it is, Meche's contract is the amount it should be around. If Lilly and others were signing for 5 or 6 million and Meche was offered 10, I'd have a problem with it, but the fact is to get that quality guy to fill in the middle of the rotation it's going to take that much.

Brining in Stairs makes me think we might see the Jays use Lind now in trade talks with other teams.
As for Stairs, I like the move myself. A power left handed bat to come off the bench, 13 homers 51 Rbi's isn't that bad at all, and he gets to come to Canada which can't hurt.
Piazza signs with the A's to be there DH to a 1 year 8.5 millon dollar contract.

Have you liked any of the off-season moves by the Jays? You seem to be very critical of every decision made thus far.

Nope not really.
I don't enjoy seeing management **** away money like a drunken sailor.
This team needs to trade to address its needs - which is starting pitching, because they cannot touch a pitcher in this market.
I also think JP is one of the worst GMs in the league too - his drafting record really doesn't impress me at all.

Ah ok. I thought that was it. For some reason some folks just don't like JP.
I don't think all the moves he makes have been good but overall I think he's done a solid job.
I would also say that the only way to compete in the AL East is to **** away money because of the Bosox and Yanks.

JP has done an okay job this offseason. There wasn't a ton out there.
I like the Stairs signing, I'm indifferent to the Thomas signing, and I hate the Clayton signing.
Last year, Overbay and Ryan were huge pick-ups.

Well I'm trying not to let my dislike for JP as a GM interfere with the critiquing of moves hes made this off season.
Spending money and maximising payroll is key, but really, you have to be smart about it. He wasn't.
Koskie: We are paying 7 million for him to hit for the Brewers. A year after we signed him. I know why we did it, we got Glaus, but what a severe lack of foresight. 1 friggen year after.
Hinske: We sign a 39 year old less capable Matt Stairs to do it, when we just traded him away at the end of last season with a bucket load of cash to the BoSox.
Just 2 examples, but lets not make this too much about JP right now.

The jays may have sent a bucketload of cash to the BoSox, but they saved themselves a few bucketsloads of cash by not paying part of Hinske's contract through its duration. There are not alot of Boston fans out there that were happy with that deal.

I agree about your assessment of Riccardi. In addition, I really don't understand the Toronto media's reluctance to criticize the guy. He's not a real moneyball GM. His trades have more often than not, been bad. I really can't stand his obsession with his ex-A's signings off-season after off-season. I'm not sure if he's among the worst, but he's darn stupid at times. He really comes across as a know-it-all bully, and it seems to work...nobody ever scrutinizes is moves. Sure he's dealt away his "mistakes", but he does not make up for them through a smart move...he trades the "mistake" out along with cash for Joeblow. Gord Ash was a genius in my mind, and I wish he was back as GM.
If the guy is smart, I hope he deals Wells for a solid starting blue-chip prospect or an up-and-comer. I've always liked Willis, but Florida would never deal for a player who would next season double their salary if they were able to re-sign him.

Well Caramon will be happy, G&M reporting that Meche has told the Jays he is going to sign elsewhere, most likely K.C according to Ken Rosenthal from fox sports. Tough break for the Jays, nothing left out there really, spark up the Wells rumours bigtime now.

I think Ash wasn't the greatest GM, he had a lot of scouts (who were cleaned house when JP came in) who were great and got some very good players.
Ash actually had a deal in place to trade Wells/Halladay for Pedro Astacio, but the Rockies backed out.
JP also has one of those that he backed out of, Lilly for Ryan Howard (back when he was blocked by Thome).
Both deals have been printed as fact by various TO media outlets.

And the price is apparently 4 yrs, 45 million to the Royals.
Color me joyful.

lol, when was the last time the Royals won a bidding war? Is that team trying to approach legitimacy again? Nah, probably not, I hope Meche enjoys losing alot of games with no run support, especially in that division.
