And if you like that freedom, you are more than welcome to pay to support it.
Personally, I would rather my tax dollars were spent on an essential service that Canadians *need*.

Can't believe my tax money supports a company like this.

After telling CBC Sports boss Nancy Lee he would be leaving CBC to work with CTV effective Dec. 30, she told Brian Williams he'd be pulled off CFL coverage immediately. When asked what he could cover for his final six months, she told him she'd let him know by fax. Minutes later the 32-year CBC veteran was informed via fax he was fired. Classy.

She has a habit of that. She sounds like a real piece of work. What a coward.

CBC loses it's Olympic coverage after 2008, correct? I can only hope they can yank the NHL away as well to put this trashy group on life support.

The difference is our tax dollars don't pay for those companies, so I have the choice to boycott them if I want to.

I don't see what the big deal is. Some companies and corporations do this to hundreds and thousands of regular joes all the time.

Once again, shouldn't we be able to expect better from a company funded by our tax dollars?

You'll have less "choice" if CBC bites the dust and if they are privatized you'll just have another minor choice between tweedledum and tweedledee.
Things could be worse for you unrestricted free enterprisers. I understand in Britain they charge a fee [$220 per year, I believe] for every TV in your house to subsidize BBC. I like BBC but you guys should get an increase in blood pressure out of this article.

And if the CBC keeps him on the payroll for the next 6 months doing nothing here can be no doubt that we'd hear "there goes the CBC again, wasting our tax dollars".

Nobody is stopping you from boycotting them. In fact since you hate them so much, you should publicly take a vow to never watch them again. Lets see if you can walk the walk.

So? What harm does it do to keep him on the CFL broadcasts for the next six months? I think maybe they should just get rid of Nancy Lee.

Huh? If they're still getting my money then why would they care if I never watched them again?

I doubt CTV would care if you boycotted them either but you're the one who was mouthing off about boycotting. So, I get it, you really didn't mean it and haven't thought the whole issue through.

No, I'm not going to boycott them. It just really irks me when a company treats it's employee of over 30 years like this, especially a company that is funded by tax dollars. Supposedly this makes them "less evil" than private corporations.

Thirty years is a long time with one company and maybe CBC should get some credit for keeping an employee for so long. I've noticed in the private media industry people are being hired and fired and changing stations all the time.

Absolutely, but this is a cowardly act. I just get sick of people saying "We need the CBC because the private companies are so cruel and heartless." The CBC is just as cold and heartless as evident here.

I don't like the way they fired the guy and I don't know why they couldn't keep him on football, but the point is they fired the guy the same way a private corporation might and they get hacked on for it. If they hang on to the guy and treat him like any lazy public institution would, they get drilled for doing it that way.
I'd think you tax-dollars-concerned citizens would be happy about this because I'm sure it saved them a lot of money.

The reason they get hacked for it is because, according to the pro-CBCers, they're like the friendly uncle and it's all because they're not privatized.

I doubt it. The CBC is unionized and he's probably going to get a colossal severance package.
