For talking about a game, some of you are way too serious with your lecturing about how players develop.
Don't let a little spirit get in the way of your hard facts though.
Genuinely wouldn't be surprised if the Flames had a lightning in a bottle season in the next two years though. Crazier things have happened.

I'm fine. I'm just discussing the likely contention cycle for the Flames which is a valid and interesting topic for a re-building club.
I think there biggest issue is that their forwards are in the earlier stages. Gridin should start to take on a bigger role next season. And maybe you have a Stromgren and a more depth forward grab a spot next season.
But in terms of top end forward, outside of Gridin, those guys are at least a couple years away. The good news is the pipeline is developing - with the guys you mentioned, plus a few others. And hopefully an impact guy this draft and next year. But that pipeline isn't as matured as the D pipeline.
It's an interesting discussion to consider. That's all. I'm not trying to be negative or argumentative. Just talking hockey.

The forwards are the biggest issue, as it is an area they will be subtracting from (Kadri, Coleman, maybe others) with no NHL ready guys to take over those big minutes and tough match-ups.
That's a tough thing to overcome every night and one of the big reasons why they will probably quite bad for another 2 years, and then start to come out of it.
Which isn't a bad thing. In fact, it could be a very good thing.

It’s weird going from watching team Canada to the Flames, but man is it much more relaxing watching Wolf than Binnington. How can we convince this guy to get Canadian citizenship lol

I wasnt saying they were going to be "good" they have FAR more than SJ or Chicago had when they drafted Bedard/Celly though

I agree they have more, they just need to add that top end. That's the key now.
1 more top end D
2 premium forwards. (1 wing, 1 center, or 2 centers)
Then you are off & running. 2 more tough years, and you may have enough.

My original post was just a playful suggestion. Not meant as initiation into a whole discussion.
That's a fair assessment though. I wasn't really thinking that deeply about it in any case, and perhaps because I guess I've been shutting out the reality of what the short to medium term likely looks like in Calgary lol.
But we just never know. Every time I've been sure we would be wandering the desert, a Bob Hartley 2015 season happens. Our stars were still super green at that time too (Johnny a rookie, Monahan sophomore).
Realistically the best chance in this case short term is if Conroy makes a hockey trade for some nhl ready talent as well as a needle-moving free agent signing or two. But I don't see anything significant happening in that way until at least our inaugural season in the new arena.

Agreed. It's a tricky balance. I'm not surprised to hear they have looked into a guy like Robert Thomas, including because I think they are worried about Frost being their #1 center. The lack of a proper center, could harm the development of the high end wing prospects they have coming. They need someone to play with. Reschney will be one of those guys, I'm certain, in time.
And hockey has enough randomness that odd, out of the blue, seasons always happen.
But when I look ahead to next season, and if one assumes Kadri and Coleman are gone, and Rasmus already gone (I think mackenzie will still be here), that looks rough.
Which again could be the best thing. The current view is next year's draft is looking to be above average to really good, particularly at the top end and with some strong centers. Could be an even more important year, than this year, to really bottom out.
Of course there was a time when that was the thought for this year draft too, and now it's considered more average. So things can change.

He’s not.
Just took a hit but some over dramatic commentary by Abbott and Hrudey makes it sound something more.
