We used to scold the Flames for always putting the puck back to the blue line. If that came to be it would become a winning strategy.

'defense wins championships' isn't a reference to defensemen (vs forwards), it is a reference to team defense. Take any dynasty team in any sport, and it is almost a certainty that that team will be known for being tremendous defensively.
What was the difference between the Panthers and the Oilers? Their offenses were similar, but one team could shut the other team down. And notably, their best defensive player is a forward.
Tampa; the 80s Islanders; the 70s Habs... try scoring against any of these teams.
