Plenty of teams start sasons without proven backup goaltenders. I think some fans are overreacting as half the goaltenders to play last season posted below .900 SV%. The bar is pretty low right now and just having a quality starting goaltender is a leg up on a lot of organizations.

CC also says he is always looking to improve the team, and that he inquires about everyone, but has a plan and won't deal if the price to upgrade doesn't fit.

I don't think he says 'make the playoffs' while quietly doubting that they can. Instead I think he says, why not? The only ones that can decide whether Flames make the playoffs is the team, by playing to 100% potential every night.

Might seem like semantics, but there is some nuance and truth there. He'll always set the bar high for his group of guys.

Conroy looks to improve the team, but the players he brings in need to fit the age range and have untapped upside. He's not bringing in a bunch of 30 year olds to shore up the backup or 3rd pairing. He's hoping to bring in players that he can sign for a long time who pop and become core pieces or high draft picks. The Markstrom and Toffoli trades were clear examples of his approach.


There have been several posts in the past showing that this team has traded away as many or more players than many other franchises in a declared rebuild.
