Its bizarre,
They need a Goalie - so they blow what ever little cap they have left on a bottom 6 player. Unless they are going to bridge Bouch on a cheap contract and take him to UFA?

Do they think he's a potential Bennett in the making, so they are trying to lock him down? That's the only thing that makes any sort of sense.
I mean, he isn't, not by a long shot, but go ahead mouth breathers, sign him up quick!

Well, he ain’t Bennett, but he had 40 points last season, and 31 the season before- he was actually a very useful player before the current campaign- big, mean, physical, and very reliable defensively. He’s just not worth the contract.

Remember when Tanner Jeanott had that 24 goal, 41 point season? You don't sign these guys to long term deals. Ever. Cap space is simply too valuable. Even if the cap goes up, salaries to top players will also go up accordingly so teams will end up right up against the cap as they are now.

Capwages is now showing Frederic signed an 8x$3.85M contract June 18. Has this become official, or does Capwages speculate at times?
edit: NVM, it says contract details have yet to be confirmed

It’s amazing how falling ass backwards into McDavid and Drai made the rest of the hockey world believe that this is a competent organization. They draft zero NHLers outside the first round, give out horrible contracts, run their top two players into the ground every year, fire a coach every other year, fire their gm every 3-4. I wonder how the league will bail them out of their pending cap mess

I'm still scratching my head as to why they haven't pursued a true #1 goalie. This is what they've needed for years, and once again, their goaltending was exposed in this playoff run. Playing a goaltender in the #1 spot does not make them a #1 goaltender.

I always waiver between thinking their goalies are no good or just that they defend really poorly and blame their goalies. Skinner had stretches where he wasn't letting anything in. But he seems to have a weak glove.
Also - what 1Gs are around they could possibly get?

Nothing obvious out there, and they’d have to have term and no trade protection. Basically they’d have to find something to make it work. Swing on a prospect before they pop. I’ve been waiting for it for years. Maybe they’ve been trying behind the scenes, but I doubt it.

The greatest thing Lindholm did as a flame was help steal Markstrom from Edmonton's talons that free agency season.

They really don't have a lot of options but Jake Allen could probably step in and start for them. They could even look at Vladar as an improvement at the backup position.

Naw man, they gotta go 'off-the-board' and find some up-and-coming goaltender from Moldova or something.

I am relatively convinced that he lost a bet.

Even setting aside my Oilers hate, I struggle to make ANY sort of sense out of this contract from the team's perspective??? The player of course is laughing all the way to the bank (as is the agent) but wtf is in it for the club?
Even if they think he's going to become a $4-6MM AAV player, there was no need at all to do 8 year term.
Genuinely baffled. Shades of the Mikko Koskinen deal signed mid-January
