The 1st looks like it'll be alright for Vancouver. Miller was overrated anyway. If this didn't become public and Miller didn't have a NTC, the return could've been better but with those conditions and the way the Rangers are going this year, next years' pick could work out well for them.

Them pretending they had anything to do with those trades is 10x better than the article one of their lame bloggers or journalists/fanboys write literally every time a new good player goes on the trade market... "should the oilers trade a 6th round pick for him". must be nice being that deluded

Canucks have flipped the 1st in this trade with Henin, Deshanais, and Fernstrom to the Pens for Marcus Pettersen and Drew Oconnor

Reading some of the comments from insiders, management etc regarding this rift between Miller and Elias, a lot of this is coming down to commitment in the gym/conditioning and a fight at the start of the season?? Anybody have more insight?
I can't imagine being an owner and having 2 high performing and quality employees who I am paying over $30 mil CAD a year and having a beef that results in poor performance. I would lose my mind if they could not figure out some basic things.

Flipping this 1st seem wildly stupid to me. I barely have knowledge of Marcus Petterson the 3rd, esquire to believe that the 1st was essential.

Couple of years ago, JFresh ranked Marcus Pettersson at the 96th percentile in WAR, mostly on the strength of even-strength defence and PK. Has anybody got access to a more recent card for him?
I think the Canucks paid far too much for their whistle (like Treliving when he landed Hamonic), but a defenceman who can actually defend was definitely something they needed.

He already has 1.4 WAR this year (counting stat, not a rate stat) per Evolving Hockey and has been 1+ each of the last four years.
League average is 0<x<1.
Good player, but let's find out what the contract is. They could have waited for UFA and kept the pick.

Hard to say if he's a culprit or victim of the overall Penguins dropoff in defensive results this year.

Imagine if the Oilers went after a guy like that when they were busy stacking epic offense with slower forwards. They may actually have won by now.

We do know what it’s about. Miller is a hyper-competitive guy who rides teammates if he doesn’t think they’re playing hard enough. Pettersson is a sensitive guy who can be sulky. The two are like oil and water.
And since they’re both star players, neither of them would back down and submit (as happens in most teams). The dressing room became split. By all accounts Tocchet was in Miller’s corner. But Pettersson is the younger and more valuable asset, so from a managerial standpoint he was the one to keep.

This seems like addition by subtraction. Now Pettersen has no excuses to get his #### together.

Crazy to think that just a few years ago the canucks had....
- A 25 year old #1 goalie (Demko)
- A 21 year old #1 Dman (Hughes)
- A 28 year old center capable of point per game or better (Miller)
- A 26 year old center capable of point per game or better (Horvat)
- A 22 year old center capable of point per game or better (Petterson)
They also had a 25 year old Boeser who had 30+ goals, a 26 year old Kuzmenko who had 30+ goals, and a 26 year old Garland who had 45 points.
Horvat gone
Miller gone
Demko with one year left then UFA
Hughes with two years left then UFA
Petterson still there but struggling and room still divided because he's why Miller is gone
They only really won one playoff round with that core and it's being torn to shreds in front of our eyes.
Hopefully they don't have some sort of dead cat bounce here, and just spiral out of the playoff picture.

This is the part I’m most confused about. I’m not sure these trades actually solves the problem.
The whole reason why teams declare injuries vaguely as “upper” or “lower” body is to avoid specifically publicizing how opposing players can “hit them where it hurts”.
However the Canucks’ tender spot has been on display for the whole world this year. There will be so many good chirps to get into Petterson’s head, heck even the rest of the team. Stadium chants of “JT’s Better” might strike a nerve. If Petey is really as sensitive as the rumours suggest, I think this pressure might actually harm his game.

And after coming back from numerous injuries, in his 14 games he's riding 0.873 and 3.26 GAA. Don't think he ever gets back to Vezna numbers.
