Do you have to be a certain level of young, and maybe even reckless to do this? It seems like such a different experience from staying in a nice hotel, yet all I can think of is "what if my passport/wallet/phone/laptop got stolen while I was sleeping" or such.

You don’t need to be reckless to stay in a hostel. But being young and broke helps. I’ve stayed in dozens of hostels, but not since my early 30s. Done with that stage of life, fun as it was. I’ve slept in hostels, train stations, open fields, and the ditch at the side of the Trans Canada highway. But these days if I don’t have a comfy, private room with a bathroom, I’m finding some place that does. It’s to the point where I’m considering forking out the extra cash to get a single occupancy hotel room when on trips with buddies rather than double up.

Yeah but you need to have a relationship with the Lord and her. That's one three-way I'm not onboard with.

Backpacking. I hike the Chilkoot Trail with some friends when I was 36 and it was one of the coolest experiences of my life. Always had it in the back of my mind that I'd like to go back and do it again when I turned 50. By that time arthritis had sent into my hip and knee and now that I'm 53 I don't trust my body to get that far into the backcountry anymore.
I take my daughter camping every summer and this August we hiked back into Bow Glacier Falls, and it felt much longer and more difficult than I remember. I knew that would be the case so I did my best to be present and savour the experience with her, not knowing if that will be the last one.

I'm getting the sense that's closer to average than the upper end.
It's the amount of bickering over very particular first world things that really gives the age of the board away though.

I agree with the 'too old for a career change' bit too. Maybe not in theory but in practice it would be pretty tough to do now and not take a significant financial hit.
One for me now is with adult kids I am essentially too old to see them experience their 'firsts' which was such an enjoyment as they grew up. They are past most of these milestones now.

There's a Japanese guy that started learning coding at 75 who never worked in anything tech prior, and now at 90 has made 11 apps and published 3 books on coding, and is still going strong.
Really ####s on the 'too old' myth given that many people who are saying they're too old for a change probably have 20 years on that guy to work with.
Definitely challenging with the cost of everything today but people with less have been resourceful enough to find a way.

Couple years ago I went to WestEd with my kids and went on the Blue Bullet water slide. I was completely caught off guard on how dizzy that made me. In the process of getting up and out of the slide I was like what the F is happening.

Most people will only make a change when forced. It is pretty hard to take a big pay cut unless you have to. As for 75 year old guy, I bet he didn't need the money

I didn't realize that I lost that ability until I was on that Harry Potter ride at Universal Orlando. I was seconds away from puking complete with watering mouth. Of course it was first ride of the day and totally ruined the rest of the day feeling like crap.

Yeah, the only way I could see it is if I started some kind of side hustle and it grew, but with current responsibilities and liabilities I don't feel like I could take the likely large decrease in income for the 5-10 years to build back up.
But I'm not a risk taker. And I enjoy what I currently do.

I am still not sure how you got "Destroyer of the back-end of a Sports team fan site" as a life long career. I just wish you'd retire.

Hm. I see. Have you explained this to a therapist? They might have some notes.
Like...if I told people that I did Taxes for free I'd get an all expenses paid trip to a padded room with no windows and fancy white jacket thats all buckles and straps....
Good drugs tho...

In psychology it's called a "secondary gain". I enjoy your suffering.

Thats what most of my clients tell me.
They get a sort of sick pleasure out of my suffering. I cant say that I blame them.

Well one of the big issues with starting a new career, is if it's radically different from your old one, a lot of employers may not want to take a risk on someone who doesn't have that background Like an office worker becoming a welder, even though welders are needed.
