Not sure how you can spin losing a top 10 pick, who was finally developing, for an awful return. Especially as Broberg plays in a position of weakness for the Oilers and was going to be cost controlled.

Well when that quote came out Giordano was in his prime. Maybe they meant .6 Giordanos.

No doubt, even after all of the drama up there this past week, the best is yet to come.
Honestly, I think he signs and at somewhat of a discount
the best part is, it will hose them again because they need to give Bouchard a big raise since they are paying the conehead Nurse so much. Then they will go through all of this the next year with McDavid.
on the other hand
how long do they hold on to him for if he doesnt commit soon?

The Drai thing is going to be interesting because his agent mentioned a end of August deadline, because his player doesn't want to be distracted with contract talks during the season.
Sure they'll say the usual, we'll talk to Edmonton at the end of the year. But the bottom line is that if Drai isn't signed, unless he has a terrible year, he's as good as gone. With the Oilers having no prospects and no picks, the Oilers should move him at the trade deadline, or risk losing him for nothing.

Bold move by the Oilers brass heading into these critical contract negotiations with Draisatl and McDavid.
Nothing coming as far as prospects. Minimal cap flexibility. An old roster.
If winning is top priority for both of them, you’d have to think they look at the situation with some degree of concern. Seems the only real upside is the ability to play together.

Can someone explain the seperate transaction of sending an extra 3rd + prospect that was last year's 5th?
Is it just so the Oil save face?

The whole thing hinges on Draisatl staying. I don’t see a scenario mcdavid stays if Drai leaves.

Spector had a big article yesterday about the Oilers "masterclass" in management to retain their players lol.
I bet his tune changes to "they are overpaid anyway"

Meanwhile Staples will give a bunch of grades ranging from A to F to players and management, while in another unrelated article give danielle smith an A

I believe it was mentioned that it was extra incentive for the Oilers to may match either.
Speculating.

I’ve already seen the narrative out there that the players were greedy and therefore not good teammates and therefore better to get rid of them…especially when wrinklies are taking discounts. Conveniently, this avoids the part where the wrinklies already made their millions.

Spector sure changed his tune in a hurry! I wonder if they already deleted the "Masterclass" column.

So, cap space is king for Oilers? If they let their youngest fwd and Dman walk as now expected, they’ll simply surround core with a liquid roster of short-term vets willing to chase Cups with 97 and 29. Flexibility at deadline worth more than development. Fascinating approach.

He actually had an almost critical article but leaned into can’t ask the big three to take discounts if they overpaid the pair. He did say it was a failure which was surprising.

Yikes. That's a tough one. Draisaitl will be turning 30 when the next contract kicks in. His play last year was a decline from 2022/23, but he likely wants a retirement contract based upon that 2022/23 season.
If they move Draisaitl does McDavid stick around?

Oilers are such a poor drafting organization, yet they mistreat their players well enough that they signed offersheets. I believe that offersheets are not widely used because both managers and players shy away from using them. These young players - who were both locks to be on the team - chose to sign them. I wonder why? They were penny-pinched and probably felt mistreated. Oilers have always been a low-class organization in the way that they treat their players, and I think this helps show that.
As for Draisaitl (and McDavid next year), please re-sign. This will really be the last kick at the can for the Oilers. They might have come close last season, but I would say this is likely their last kick at the can, and they are too old and just went through a long playoff run. I don't see them returning, and with Draisaitl getting a significant raise, plus Bouchard soon, they will just have more trouble building around them, with very little coming up the pipeline. They absolutely need to be a good drafting team or a team where players will take a discount to play - they are neither. I am really hoping both their superstars re-sign there, as I just don't see the Oilers being able to build around them. They didn't win squat during their primes on cheaper deals, and it will only be harder to win as they age and are signed on larger deals.
