Babcock is a weird one because outside of being an ####### to Johan Franzen there isn't really a lot of other stories about him outside of Commodore.

Shanahan played for him in Detroit and still hired him as a coach. Yzerman hasn't really spoken out against him.

So I'm sure he's an #######, but honestly I'm not sure he's any different than a grumpy old guy like Darryl Sutter was here.

A lot of these coaches are going to have a lot of detractors and a bunch of guys on their side.

Look at Toffoli for instance he said Darryl is the best coach he ever hard but he also acknowledged that he is difficult and does dumb things in that get on players nerves.

The issue becomes the NHL needs to stop recycling these dinosaurs who have outdated ways and move on and we will have less of the stories and issues.

Its not just coaches either a lot of the old school people have difficulty adapting to new ways, and a lot adapt just fine.

In the wake of his firing last season, a story surfaced in the Toronto Sun that Babcock had asked Mitch Marner, during the forward’s rookie season, to rank his teammates’ work ethic and the Leafs coach later shared the list with the players.

“Yeah, that’s not how that happened, actually,’’ Babcock said. “I was working with Lou (Lamoriello) at that time, we made it very clear our No. 1 priority was to make sure these young guys, Mitch, Matty (Auston Matthews), were going to be the best pros they can be at 23, 24. And turn them into the hardest working, best players they can possibly be.

“So Mitch was in my office. We were talking about work ethic. I asked him where he ranked on the scale. And that was no problem, that was just a private thing. It was a good meeting, Mitch left. But then I was meeting, I’m pretty sure it was with (Tyler) Bozak, afterward. Bozy was an important part of our team. What I ended up doing — and I made a big-time mistake, I knew as soon as I did it — when we were talking about competing and I said, ‘Well look where Mitch ranks it.’

“Well, as soon as I did that, and he saw the list, I knew that I had made a major mistake. After the meeting with Bozak, I went right into the dressing room. I grabbed Mitch and said, ‘Mitch, this is what I did. I screwed you here.’’’

Babcock said he offered right then and there to Marner to air out the coach’s mistake with the team. Marner declined. But for those who said Babcock went into the dressing room and posted Marner’s list up for all to see, that’s not true, Babcock said.

And the Franzen incident

“When a player that you’ve coached says that about you, it stings you big time. But not only does it sting for that, if you’ve been involved with mental health like I have …'”

“Can you imagine having someone say that about you when you have been involved in mental health as much as I have? Now, I’ve reached out to (Franzen). That’s not going to make anything go away.

To be honest his version of the Marner story is so specific that I would have a hard time thinking he's making it up. Was probably a stupid tactic on his part to try to motivate Marner a bit, but doesn't seem super malicious.

The Franzen one is a bit different and he doesn't really outright deny anything.

I have no doubt that Babcock is a bully, and he seems to have questionable tactics to motivate players...but in the end both Bissonette and Commodore really seemed to be making huge leaps today with how they say he's a pervert or that he's looking for dick pics.

He’s probably not, but there are a lot of stories about him that don’t & won’t see the light of day for obvious reasons. No one really cares now that it’s clear that Babs is NOT the legend his previous public image was trying to present. Commodore first publicized his issues because Chelios wanted it known what a clown Babcock is & was.

Babcock has always used psychological hacks &/or tricks to manipulate and borderline abuse players. He thinks he’s smarter than everyone else. He will coach players in ways that are upfront, genuine, honest, & fair/firm ONLY when he can explicitly gain something from them.

He isn’t stupid either.

He’s very prepared, organized, and highly calculative. He will commodify every & any piece of information or knowledge to gain a real or perceived advantage.

The problem is his ego makes it difficult to see the forest from the trees.

The bloom is also now off the rose. Same as Sutter.

It is a pretty tight needle to thread when you can be an Ahole or wrong (not win), but not both.

Need more context. A veteran player being asked to share family photos is going to feel different than a younger player being asked for pictures of their girlfriend on summer vacation.

Seems like another thing blown out of proportion before all the facts came out.

I think what Babcock did to Marner was a scummy thing to do to a rookie, but there seems to be a lot of players that liked him. I think Kadri basically credited Babs for turning his career around. And Kadri had the reputation of not putting the work in before Babs. I think he's a tough coach and modern players can't take that, but if they are willing to buy-in I think he can get results.

IMO today shows that the pattern could just as easily be the NHL gossip-mill misrepresenting stories...

I think Babcock still sounds like a general POS, but I suspect the truth on most of these stories is closer to the middle than either side.
