Oh boy.

First Italy elect a far-right party and now France? Sweden tipping? Imagine that its the Germans as the voices of reason in Europe...?

I do find it historically ironic that you have countries like France and England who are 'anti-immigration.'

Is it really 'immigration' if they're coming from countries that are historically your colonies that you subjugated?

Kind of sucks having that shoe on the other foot now doesn't it?

I don't think these people are generally anti-immigration. But some of these governments around the world have really been lax about who exactly has been allowed into the countries during these mass immigration waves. Canada generally has done it right but when you don't screen the people enough, you're bound to get some really bad influential apples who do crazy stuff when coming in. Too much immigration and change to existing ways of life is bound to create some issues. Watch Wild Wild Country for what happened to the states in the 80s. It's not hard to see how some changes are annoying.

That wasn't 'annoying' per se, that was genuinely malicious.

The biggest problems with Mass Immigration are very basic. Affordability of housing and unemployment, it makes getting a house or job harder for everyone because you just massively increase the pool.

You cant just 'fling the doors open' and take all comers. There needs to be a sustainable action plan otherwise you get disaffected people who are displaced from their homes but not really in a better life situation.

Thats when you get problems.

I was going to say the same thing. It has to be done in a sustainable manner. These kinds of revolts are predictable. Honestly, I don't think Canada and the U.S. are that far behind.

In all these countries immigration is necessary to support pensions. I can't see us in any way pulling back. As a side note, I really wonder the effect AI will have on jobs widespread. It's crazy what we're on the verge of, and with all large corporations investing in this in any way possible, a huge chunk of skilled labour is going to be automated. I think that will be the cause of worldwide issues where this is going to replace so many jobs, how do you create an economy for what it replaces?

Something, something, Charlie Bucket's Dad fixing the machine that took his job at the toothpaste factory....

No. In all seriousness we need an actual plan and not a Roald Dahl story.

It doesn't help that many of these European countries are also ghettoizing large groups of people. People won't integrate and modernize if they live their lives in poor communities surrounded by other poor people being exposed to their own fundamentalist beliefs.

I didn't think the failed integration is entirely one thing. You definitely also have migrants moving in with no intention of integration or positive contribution. The living conditions that many of these European nations do create an audience for these people though.

About the same effect "the block chain!!1!" had on the world. Not much. AI is 95% a VC hype bubble right now.

Denmark is trying to de-ghettoize immigrant neighbourhoods by literally bulldozing buildings to break up unassimilated communities. Which seems a rather illiberal approach to the problem.

Austria, or at least the city of Vienna, is taking a lighter approach. When non-Austrians sign up for public housing, they distribute them in a way that avoids clusters and therefore promotes assimilation. I think Denmark is trying have a do-over.
