It’s true that’s those guys have other skills and that makes them excell. But Point and to a lesser extent Draisaitl didn’t have minor improvement. Point is now an excellent skater, and Draisaitl is pretty darn good.
I’m surprised this is even a discussion after all the stories about Point and his skating.
I don’t remember how Point was before the draft
But Drai and him have never been that bad since I watched them
Only Tkachuk was ugly . Maybe because I mainly watch the Flames
Anyway, I agreed it can be improved but minor for most people. There is always exceptions, that’s why they are stars.
Going back and watching vids to learn more. This pick looks great. What am I missing? His skating isn’t an issue in those videos. At all. Just skates like a bigger guy. Not blazing but pretty strong for his age. Wait until he grows into his body more.

I am very intrigued by this prospect. I have not seen this posted but this guy does a pretty nice breakdown of Suniev - which includes videos that I haven't seen posted in this thread.

The important thing is that Suniev already does the right things when it comes to his skating, it's just in isolation of each other. He can get up to a good top speed. He can be agile and dance through defenders with shifty feet and nifty hands. He can widen his stance when he needs to be more difficult to knock off his feet. It's just a matter of refinement during his transitions from one to the other. And that's something where I think an NHL team with a large and advanced development staff, like the Maple Leafs, can help him a lot.
Because if you can unlock Suniev's skating to the point that it's not a flaw at the NHL level, just something that's not at an elite level, he has everything you'd want to be a useful forward. He has the physical tools in terms of his size, reach, and power forward habits. He has the finesse and the skills to be a dual-threat offensively, with his shot and his playmaking. He has the forechecking and puck skullduggery and board work to make coaches love him.
Funny how the scouting write-up says “He’s not likely to ever be a star”. Just goes to show that you gotta let these picks take their time to prove themselves

I'm a biomecanic freak when it comes to sports and for those saying that an 18 or 19 year old cannot improve their skating are 100% wrong for multiple of reasons.
First off most men's growth plate are closed by 21 years but muscles keep developping.
This is why poor skaters improve after 21.
The next step is to check if athlete has the physical attributes to improve their form.
Here are things required:
Dorsiflexion (positive shin angle)
Triple flexion
Triple extension
Internal and external hip rotation (both important for sound lower body structure)
Al these things can be improved with the correct stretch and strength exercises and for those who have problems with ankle mobility, just take the laces down an eyelet.

Wow, those highlights were great for showing this isnt a kid who was riding his linemates. Significant amount of primary 5v5 points and mid range shots.

Listening to Conroy talk about Suniev's fearlessness to go to the middle and how Conry gets a little nervous - has me nervous too.
As this kid progresses to higher levels there are guys like Morin who are looking for the big hit. So I hope he handles the puck with his head up. If in BCHL he just powered through guys he has to be wary at the next levels.

“I will tell you exactly why we were able to get him at 11 and I will tell you exactly why teams had him rated lower than us,” said Craig Button, who was Dallas’ director of scouting at the 1995 NHL Draft in Edmonton. “Because there wasn’t a lot of flash and dash with Jarome. He didn’t wow you. He didn’t go end to end. But as you watched him, he was a strong player in every single area of the game. A really good player who could play it any way you wanted. He was heavy. He was hard. Kill penalties. Score. Make plays.
“I’d like to tell you that we thought Jarome Iginla was going to be a superstar,” said Button. “We thought Jarome was going to be a really strong power forward — 35 goals (a year). Guess what? We were wrong. He was way better than we projected.”
I hope Iginla gets a lot of 1-on-1 time with Honzek in Vancouver this season...
