Toffoli was born in April, so will only be 31, but a 6 year contract would bring him to 38. Toffoli probably wanted a decent sized contract as he led, an offensively inept, team in scoring. Toffoli for 6 years would've been a bafflingly bad move.

I can see Toffoli's trade value being lowered by his high contract demands. I can also see Toffoli regressing to a career average, or possibly below in NJ. He may have F-ed himself with that 6 year demand. Realistically, players like him should be hoping for 4 years max.

Lebrun's "getting a ton of calls on Sharangovich" comment would probably fly in the face of a "Devils didn't want to qualify" suggestion.

If anyone is interested it was released 8 days ago, with the same guy that did the Zadorov comprehensive interviews. It's an hour and a half with Egor.

You guys let me know if I should bother translating it like the Zadorov interview, or if you can understand the subtitles on youtube.

All the whining I've read in the past couple days makes me think I accidentally got on the Oilers boards.

Regarding the trade itself, I quite like it and I am happy with Conroy's work. With the market the way it is where Hall goes for nothing and Kevin Hayes goes for a 6th round pick, this return is actually quite good. Toffoli was not going to be a Flame after the next season and this was the time to trade him (or before season starts).

With Coronato coming in next year, and Flames in general wanting to give more opportunity to younger players, it was quite likely that Toffoli would have been on pace for around 40-50 points and would return less at the trade deadline. The only reason he got this many points is that he was the Flames go to guy, which can not happen next season - it needs to be Huby. Yes Toffoli did great on the PP last season but I think in general it made the Flames PP not as good as it could have been, he played the same spot that Huby should be playing. I would almost guarantee that one of the Huska's point in his presentation was to have Huby playing the left side which would most likely result in Toffoli being on the second unit and see a significant point drop. Additionally he would not be stapled on the first line like was all of last season. I loved Toffoli but he was just not the way Flames should be moving forward, another season of him would have changed nothing.

I loved that they got a guy like Yegor, this trade reminds me a bit of Fiala to Minny trade a couple years back. Flames can not trade all of their UFAs for picks, they have too many players signed for 6-8 more years, you need to trade for some young RFAs that have potential to become something more. I will trust in our analytics department and clearly they like the player. There are too many good forwards on the Devils that pushed Yegor out of the line up but that should not be an issue here, like just take a look at their top 9 it is probably the best in the league (at least in the regular season for now).

The contract is fine, you can't really do much here, he would not have signed for more than 3 years unless you wanna give him 5+ mil. There are plenty of UFAs who re-sign with their current team, especially if he has a good season next year he will want to sign an extension in the summer to guarantee his money. Yegor seems like a super lovable player and I have been to Belarus and it is quite cold, he should have no issues with Calgary as a city and be more than willing to re-sign. I think the Flames environment will be way better next year and it should be a good place to play, I have no concerns with him re-signing if he has a good year.

So. He shoots left and can play to the right side of Huberdeau. Big, can skate, and has a good shot. And Huberdeau reached out already to welcome him. Very interesting.

I wonder what NJ will do with Toffoli going forward. He's going to want a raise and supposedly 6 years. NJ has some room and their top end contracts aren't nuts. But They still need defensive help and maybe more in goal. And they have to sign Meier still.

Think Sharongovich will quickly become a fan favorite and a lot of people will be eating crow.

Huberdeau was best in Florida when he had a speedy winger with him. Hopefully works out with Sherry!

I think New Jersey just got a deadline rental early. Don't think they'll be rushing out to sign him

2 years at a million above his QO and then he is a UFA. Nice work by his agent, probably was not getting much more than that on yearly basis and the term is low enough that if he hits he can get paid at UFA time.

Flames save 1.15 million in cap space and gain a year of having a guy under contract to play in Calgary.

This player really intrigues me and this is a low risk "show me" contract. Well done Connie.

When you consider that he was on NJ's top PK unit and had almost no PP time, there is added value and potential to increase the value if he gets more PP this season.

I have nothing against the player or the dollar amount, it just would have been nice to get a UFA year or 2 out of the contract. I imagine with the stagnant cap this year, but the potential for it to explode in a couple of seasons, a lot of players in his shoes are going to avoid signing for longer though.

I do think he has a really good chance to pop next season, which would put the team in a good spot even if it means just having to flip him if he indicates that he isn't going to sign a long term deal. See what happens I guess.

As a side note, his agent Dan Milstein, has a really interesting back story. He immigrated from Ukraine to Michigan right after the fall of the USSR. His first job in America was cleaning bathrooms at a McDonald's. He ended up graduating university and caught on with a talent agency, and was tasked with being Pavel Datsyuk's interpreter and is now one of the most prominent player agents for Russian born players, but he has other clients as well. A real rags to riches success story.

I can't see anyone offering Toffoli anything more than 3-4 years for an extension. Even then, that will depend on his performance this upcoming year. If Toffoli underperforms he'll end up as that post-30 player being bounced around with 1-2 year contracts until his retirement.
