Hayes at 3.5 for three years is how you effectively manage the cap. That's phenomenal value.

They wanted to get Hayes out of town, and this is what it took. He has a brutally bad contract.
The Flyers are tanking, make no mistake about it.

Interesting preseason when Sanheim and Krug walk into their dressing rooms in September.

Just when you think NHL GM's couldn't get worse than Chiarelli or Benning, Chuck Fletcher comes along and says "hold my beer".

When they originally brought him in the trade was insane. Then the contract was insane. Terrible asset management from beginning to end.

Why is it bad? They clearly had no takers for Hayes and his brutal contract. With that in mind, they ate $10.5M over three years and gained a 6th round pick to get rid of a player that they didn't want/would actively hurt their tank.
The Flames spent a 1st round pick to get someone else to eat $6.375M.
This is what happens when your organization's path shifts (or doesn't).

I get moving Hayes and trying to go into the tank.
But it's weird to me that they couldn't extract some type of value for Hayes at $3.5M.
$3.5M for a guy who has averaged 52 points per 82 games the last three season is still okay value even if he's a bit flawed as a player.

The Bruins had to give away Taylor Hall yesterday because of term, and i'd argue he's a significantly better player than Kevin Hayes.
Term on support players is not looked upon kindly, it would seem.
The fact that the Flames have the players they do on expiring deals could put them in a good spot this draft/free agency/trade deadline.

Taylor Hall at $6 mil x 2 = free.
Ryan Johansen at $4 mil x 2 = free.
Kevin Hayes at $3.5 mil x 3 = free.
Cap is king this summer.

But Taylor Hall was moved at $6M...with no retention so free makes sense there.
But yeah I guess the comparison here is likely Johansen, but I'd say over the past three seasons Hayes has been better than Johansen although if Johansen rebounds he may have the higher upside.
In any scenario it really shows why Flames should not be offering term or a rich contract to any of Lindholm, Toffoli, or Backlund.

Yeah this is like saying trading Neal for Lucic was good asset management. Sure that move made sense, but the mistake was made earlier. In this case 2019. Not to mention this is only the second off season where they could actually move him at all (NMC the first three years).

What it and some other trades show is how little cap is available this year.

They should get value as there is a good chance St Louis gets huge value. What happens come deadline next year and Hayes is having a good year and the trade him and retain 50%. What is Hayes worth at $1.7 mil? Having a good year? They could get a first.
What does a buyout look like if it goes the other way? Or St Louis pay a 5th to get rid of him next summer to a rebuilding team no salary retained and Philly is still on the hook?
St Louis added a valuable asset for nothing and have tons of options if things go well or they don't.
Philly can't trade the retained salary so what did they gain? Is Hayes blocking them from going full tank? Really how many wins will he add?
I'd just trade guys that are valuable if you want to go full tank. Hayes isn't blocking them from getting that done. Trade Hart and Konecny and they will suck enough

This is what we should expect if we trade Kadri. If we eat 3.5 million for the next 6 seasons we could probably get a 3rd though, should be worth a bit more than Hayes.

It's making me feel like the inefficiency is now overvaluing cap space...problem is we don't have any at the moment, but after we make a couple more deals.
