Appropriate name lol.

The Savard trade may not be the worst Flames trade ever, but the timing was just awful. Getting a useful prospect/player back in Nov 2002 could have been a difference maker in 04 and beyond.

Normally, I’d say hindsight is 2020 for a lot of deals that I look back on. I know I can be very biased when I look back at deals.

But even at the time trading Savard for a no name prospect can’t have been considered a good move. Ruslan Zainullin was the best offer that Flames got? Would the Flames have even had a Russian scout in that penny pinching era?

Imagine the numbers that Iginla would have put up through his prime if he had Savard as his centre.

I see nothing about this hiring on the Flames website. Am I missing something here?

That's why it's still tagged as [Rumour]

Savard has tweeted what he tweeted (and insiders have since noted that he's been hired)

Friedman had the MacLean, Lambert, Labarbera info.

We're likely waiting until Monday for an announcement.

Nothing official yet. Likely another Monday press conference (my own conjecture)

Right, which means that if the Flames's goalies do struggle this season, then it is almost certainly not entirely because Jordan Sigalet sucks. However, given that the head coach has an impressive track record on coaching the defensive side of the puck, I expect that the goalies will probably perform quite well.

I’d laugh if Savard was unnecessarily hard on (Dennis) Gilbert.

Very interesting that Lambert will be running the d-men.

Quote:
"Dan served as Ryan Huska's assistant in Kelowna from 2009-2014. We feel those past relationships will allow us to get up to speed quicker and hit the ground running," said Flames General Manager Craig Conroy. "While Dan will be running our defence, he also provides well balanced experience having run the power play in Nashville the past four years. The focus is keeping the puck out of the net, but Dan's approach generates an offensive flair from the back-end."

I thought Lambert was a powerplay guy.

There are likely going to be some growing pains with this team just given all the change, so it is the perfect time to give someone like Savard an opportunity. Not a tonne of coaching experience, but the experience he has is very positive. Potentially a high reward hire if it works out.

I am glad to see him back in the organization. I know for a fact that he loved Calgary and that he was really happy when he was traded there from New York. It's a shame that things went sour with Gilbert.

Feels like a very powerplay focused staff.

Both Lambert and Savard are primarily powerplay coaches. I understand that Lambert will coach the defense but I would imagine that Huska wants to have an active role in that regard.

Interesting to say the least.

with the massive caveat that who knows who is on this team next season, but last season the powerplay lost us games, so the focus on that makes sense.

Went to click on the Randy Sportak tweet only to quickly remember that he blocked me about 10 years ago at this point when I fooled him and some other media into RT'ing my tweet about Gaudreau announcing that he was returning to BC for his 4th season lol
