Kind of wish this had happened two years ago. Would have been awesome having Conroy as GM, Iggy as Super Assistant or whatever, and Sutter as coach.

Interesting that Iginla also name dropped Cammalleri and Tanguay as guys that he and Conroy used to talk about team management topics with. Maybe we see both those guys again at some point.

Difference is that the Oilers OBC had no legitimate experience to claim, and right out of the gate started making dumbass attempts to dunk on the media for questioning them. Conroy and Iggy have both been working for years in off-ice roles that make sense here.

I've noticed that you're really obsessed with Markstrom and how bad he was last season, eh?

In the Flames TV interview, I like how he mentioned that different guys needed different approaches. Same overall rules, but tailored to the individuals' needs. That's something I don't think an old-schooler gets.

I wouldnt say obsessed. 'Confused' would be more accurate.
He went from a Vezina candidate the year before to the worst starting goaltender in the NHL.
And I've said it a million times. If we'd gotten even just bang-average goaltending the Flames would have made the playoffs.
How many times did he let the first shot in?
Sorry, if you dont feel that Markstrom should be fair game for some fairly extreme criticism then I dont know what to tell you.
He finished the season with a save percentage of 0.892.
You know what that gets you? A lot of losses.

I'm going to guess that over 50% of the active posters barely remember Iginla given their age, and that's okay. Just know that today's announcement is an amazing moment for the Flames and the older fanbase like myself and nothing you can say will convince us that this anything but a great move.

Iggy will definitely help bring players to the city. Remember the amount of respect that man had as a player?

Quite honestly, I dont know what kind of a move it is. But the fact of the matter is that Jarome Iginla is a perpetually positive person and I think that this franchise needs some positivity and if there are any two guys that can bring that joy and fun to the team its Iginla and Conroy.
It just feels like its been so dour around here lately that the cure could only be the two happiest Flames.

Conroy, yes. Iginla, no. Iggy has been coaching his kid. Hardly years of off-ice experience that is relevant here, unless the Flames are going to ice a really young pubescent squad.

I know which group wants the cup more.

Yeah the Oilers were based on Lowe, who had just retired, an assistant for one year, coach the next, then GM the year after....with all the executives and 20 owners of the team all ganboys, nd his sole desire was to recreate the same type of dressing room and be the same father figure as a GM that Slats was to him and created in the 80s.
It shaded all of his decisions with no one to tell him no and given his fast track from a player to a GM in 3 seasons, and his desire to recreate the 80s, he knew nothing more and his ego was too big to let him get some actual NHL guidance.
Conroy got screwed over by the GM he last played for, has seen the ups and downs. Iginla.is nothing more right now that someone to provide guidance and a bit of a trusted, external sounding board for the GM. Again, years away from the game helped him mature and realize how and where he fits in an NHL organization.

Not so worried about Iginla's resume at this point. It's a part-time, work from home position. He'll give it a year and go from there. Low risk.
I recall they hired Lanny McDonald, and while he did corporate schmoozing and box suite sales he harboured a desire to get into hockey ops. Led to some bad blood and it took a while for egos to smooth out.
Don't know if it was Risebrough or Coates at the time that gave him the brush-off.

Lifetime Suspension

Listening to his interviews man he sounds so involved and he knows so many people in the game and little things he picks up and talks about.
Doesn't sound like a guy who has been outside looking in but someone who stays up to date on everything happening.
I wonder if they give him a pick this year.

That's right too. Jarome gets another shot to lift the cup for the Flames. What a moment that would be.
Can you imagine..

Kipper as a goalie coach could work. He could just take Markstrom out fishing in a small boat on a lake and help him find his zen. Just weekly silent fishing trips on Markstrom's way to the Vezina.

He’s been a hockey exec for a few years, as an owner of a team.

Because we’re all too old and our memory is weak or cause you think half of the board is younger than 30?
