My biggest worry is that Conroy is just a yes man to Edwards. He's been around the organization for a decade and that's how they've operated during that time.
Fresh outside voice would have been way better but it seems clear they didn't want to go that route.
I'm expecting more of the same for the next decade.

The first reality is that you have NO idea (unless you are a true insider, of which I've seen no evidence) of HOW Conny played inside the Flames playpen. He could have been silent, resentful, opposed, favourable, supportive or any of them all at different times.
The second reality is that he was NOT the guy with the last vote. So, however he was, may or may not have been influential on Tre.
The third reality is that neither you (nor it appears anyone else) seems to know if Murray is directly involved or not, wants a yes man or a new thinker, or just a cheap guy.
All we outsiders know is that he put $100 million+ on the table for Hubes, Weegs and Kadri and let Tre walk (apparently unhappily). And paid Darryl $8M or so to walk as well.
So...maybe just wait and see? He might have been that (ignored) "fresh voice" in the room.

Iginla has coached his kids' teams like hundreds of other former NHLers. With both his sons being in the WHL the Wranglers would be a more likely starting point, as with Joel Otto and Matt Stajan as previous examples..
If he wants to coach, that is.
And since winter driving is one of Iginla's areas of expertise, the Dub makes more sense.

I've got a hunch that Dave Nonis will be hired as AGM, Iggy as assistant coach to Mitch Love on the big team, and Pascal will likely move on to other pastures, along with some other tweaks. I'll bet Conny is going to slim down the off ice team a bit.

Well, that would, if proven true, make ALL of CP very happy. (Except for WO403 and Stang...)

Love Conroy. Glad to hear this. Definitely better than some of rumoured options like Nonis, or freakin' Bowman...
I believe he is capable of great things in the GM chair.

I’m fine with this. If they had handed it to him without doing a thorough search I would have been miffed. i guess conroys first order of business is selecting a coach.

I like this for a couple of reasons. First, it reflects well on the organization that they're willing to reward internal personal for years of hard work. Second, this organization needs an image and culture change. I think Conroy has the ability to provide both. Now, let's hope he's given free-range to do so.

We do have a good idea of Conroy is like. He's been with this organization's front office for the past decade.
We also do know that Edwards' mandate is do everything to compete. No rebuild. That is well established.
Hiring an internal candidate suggests that mandate has not changed, and it is much more likely that Conroy will follow that mandate. All I am saying is that I had hoped that maybe over the course of this assessment of the organization and hiring process that this view has changed. It hasn't.
I'm not necessarily saying that Conroy will be a bad GM. Only that it is a bad hire because it suggests this organization will do more or less the same thing as they have done the last decade with more or less the same results.
Your last sentence is wishful thinking. Conroy will be very restricted in how he will operate. That is my biggest concern.

Not uncommon to get input from NHL offices about people who the league have dealt with in the past. Happens on the regular with big hires like this one actually.

I don't like it, but of course I'll be pleasantly surprised if he ends up being anything better than mediocre.
But of course I'm happy for Conroy the person. He was my favorite player while he was a Flame.

The Oilers old boys were egotistical dumbasses. Other organizations have brought back members of the “old gang” and have been successful (Brind'amour in Carolina, Sakic in Colorado, Yzerman in Detroit, etc.)

I like the hiring of Conroy. Seems like a real student of the game and willing to build a team in the current style of the league. I hope the Flames move forward with surrounding him with the best and brightest and not just a bunch of guys that played with him or were heroes of the past.

Honest question; what leads you to believe this? I’ve heard Conroy speak on occasion and he seems fine with what he has to say publicly. Can’t say I recall him saying anything that stood out particularly. Of course, I haven’t heard everything the guy has said but he does have a strong track record and I think he deserves the shot and is a solid selection. I would have been disappointed if he didn’t get it ahead of some of the rumoured candidates.
Hoping he’s able to bring a new perspective and able to shift some of thinking within the organization that I believe has held them back from being a little more progressive in their approach. Looking forward to the press conference where he may speak to the approach to this season and beyond.

Conroy played 1000 games in the league. Not bad for a sixth rounder who had to adapt his game to become an excellent defensive forward. That suggests understanding the intricacies of the game.
