I have read it and I just spent the last 45 minutes reading it again before replying. How can you call that precise? Most of the demands are vague, meaningless and unachievable or would be impossible to measure.
Plenty are just weird and nonsensical, too. Like, demanding healing lodges for Aboriginal people in federal penetenturies...um, no, sorry, you lost your rights for the stuff you enjoy doing when you were sent to prison. That's stupid. Or demanding equal access to medical care for metis who do not live on reserves. Guess what? They have that. What are you talking about? There is no way metis people are being turned away from the triage desk at the Foothills Hospital. It's absurd. There are so many like that. Wording as though they're lacking rights that they absolutely have. It feels like this document would have made sense if written in 1841, but it's way out of line in 2023 since the gripes aren't relevant.

Healing lodges aren't for funsies. These institutions are tied to indigenous faith and spiritual culture. Prison chapels have already been converted into inter-faith spaces to accomodate a variety of religious and spiritual backgrounds, so it isn't too much to ask that these spaces be accomodating to rituals like smudging (or whatever else may be inclusive to a healing lodge) for a populace already overrepresented in the system.
It seems like they have implemented this request: https://www.csc-scc.gc.ca/002/003/002003-2000-en.shtml
And on the topic of systemic racism, it has long been a complaint that First Nations and Metis peoples are discriminated against in the healthcare system. Asking for equity in healthcare in the face of racial discrimination and stereotyping seems completely reasonable.
Just because the service is available to them does not mean they will receive equal treatment.

I think I've cracked the code here: firework displays will be too expensive and impractical once we're all locked into our 15 minute zones.

Honest question, is a laser show an acceptable alternative to fireworks? If so why? Is it the explosions themselves? Why is a laser show less offensive?
Just curious as it seems the point is celebrating Canada Day, not the fireworks themselves.
So is this just going to make all sides angry?

Go see the light show. I'm sure it will be just as exciting watching fireworks for the 400th time in your life.

No one is lol. We do a lot of fireworks here. All throughout Stampede, Canada Day, Global fest, and the Tsuut’ina nation lights them off for various different reasons. Why do you care as an someone from the eastern provinces?

I'm confused. The issue is that people find it offensive to celebrate Canada Day? I would think that would be a pretty extreme viewpoint that wouldn't carry a lot of weight.

I would think Victoria Day is more offensive.

Silver insinuated Calgary was cancelling fireworks because of reconciliation with the indigenous population.
They have talked about banning fireworks here as well. Mainly because they annoy people and animals because they are loud. They left out the stupid culture comment so people can fight about the real issue without pretending it's some culture war thing.

It states directly in the news article that reconcilation with indigenous groups is one the motivations cited by the city for cancelling the fireworks.

This sentence seriously made me laugh. Like the inventors of gun powder just named it gun powder waiting for guns to come around.

Wanna be personal? You have bullied a severely handicapped Flames fan who was raising a few bucks to decorate his mini-van. That's as cringe as it gets and disgusting.
As a general observation, what's cringe is how quickly any topic here is dominated by your ilk of posters with the same agenda. There are no discussions being held here anymore; just a few of you stroking each other over your deep intellectualism. So, yes, it is predictable and woke AF. Enjoy. Post Simpson's old man screaming at the clouds gif.

Um, they are… But as far as I know, Indigenous people didn’t ask for them to be cancelled.

^ That’s kind of it for me. One would assume that if they took this step, it’s because they actually talked to a bunch of people. That doesn’t seem like a safe assumption anymore. I approach this stuff assuming I’m ignorant. If the fireworks make for an emotionally painful day for a lot of people, I would like to learn about that, and then I would be empowered to support the direction they are taking. But I don’t see an avenue being provided to gain empathy and understanding for those the change is meant to help. And I think that part is way more valuable than the change itself.
Shallow actions won’t solve deep pain.
Edit: was about the thing above Chris Sutter. Or was it?
