There's a guy on Kijiji renting it for $25/day. So long term, makes more sense to buy, but I don't really see a need for myself beyond that week, so may just bite the bullet on a rental.

You are not going to be checking in every 2 hours unless you never leave Whitehorse. here's a coverage map:

I didn't have data there, but anywhere there is a tower should have decent speeds. So Whitehorse, Dawson City, and Inuvik...

Jokes on you, as I have Rogers....which is uh, not any better.

But yeah, it looks pretty sparse, hence looking at getting the Starlink. I wish I could just drop off the grid for the week, but alas not really doable.

Are you calling 'JimBob's Jerky and RV Emporium' not legit?

I've found a solution for you....

Try any Starlink Service for 30 days and, if not satisfied, return the hardware for a full refund.
https://www.starlink.com/

You probably need to Roam version.

Yes, I was able to send pictures and the like with no problem. It is not just spotty outside of towns...it is basically non-existent.

If you just need a phone with data - you can buy/rent a satellite phone with data. Its not going to be a great experience, but if you dont need the whole starlink system - you can rent these things for a lot cheaper than that.

My dad had the Iridium system on a boat, and it was worse than aweful. Just a total waste of time and $1000 by the end with all their fees.

Even the physical wired internet isn't always great up here.

Also,

Just did a test (In inuvik) on my personal and my work cells, LTE speeds:

Koodo (telus): Download 9 mbps, upload 0.5 mbps
Bell: 23 down, 2.4 up

EDIT:
tried a second time on Koodo (7 down, 3 up)

Guess it depends what you need it for. If you just need to be connected and check a few messages while you drive - its not that expensive. If you are making calls a bunch of calls and trying to get online, etc - yes - not cheap.

Not good news if you are planning on travelling the Dempster. A fire by Eagle Plains has closed the highway both ways and north to the territorial border.

Oh geez, I hope it doesn't burn down. It's kind of a vital stop on the road.

It's been really bad the last couple weeks, and I'm finding out now as I'm back up.

Physical Wired internet through Northwestel = 1 mbps up and down.

So much for trying to stream stuff.

I have a Roam Starlink that I could offer for rent, the catch... it's $170 a month (monthly-only billing is currently on pause) and that would have to be the minimum I charge. I have an EcoFlow Delta Pro w/ 160W portable solar panel too for extra remote utilization. I would need to ask for a deposit equal to the replacement value of the equipment. Is there a market for this type of thing?
