Back home. Live impressions:
This was a legit 3-3 game. The teams were even. NJ played very well at times. Flames played well at times in the 2nd and 3rd. Reffing was a difference maker though. NJ tended to fall down pretty darn easily. The last penalty was super soft and Markstrom was really mad about it.
There’s no way to blame Markstrom - he made a few great saves in the third to preserve a point. The Flames didn’t get the grade A chances NJ did, that’s for sure. And their goalie got lucky a bunch of times when he didn’t see the puck.
Lucic was ineffective tonight. Mangiapane wasn’t noticeable. Dube was around the puck all night but just not quite able to do anything. Lindholm, Kadri, Hanifin, Rasmus, and (for the most part) Zadorov had strong games. Huberdeau is funny - he made some really nice plays. I think he’s going to find his game soon. I thought Lewis and Ritchie were OK as well.
They miss Tanev big time. Mackey had a horrific first period and didn’t see a lot after that.

Better to deal with adversity now than in the playoffs. Flames need to learn how to keep it together when Tanev is out injured.

It almost seemed like Lucic complaining so hard about a soft trip caused the refs to continue to call soft penalties against Calgary the rest of the night. And NJ caught on.

Players/Coaches/Media say whatever suits their narrative in interviews.
Winning during a busy stretch of games? "It's great to get a good stretch of games so we can get in the rhythm."
Losing during a busy stretch of games? "We have had too much travel and no chance to practice which hasn't helped us get in the rhythm."
Home teams win more than away teams.
Tired teams, second night of back to backs, and especially third game in four games lose more than rested teams.
All the data I've ever seen backs up that playing at home and being rested is superior to playing tired and on the road.
I'll go with the data over what may be rationalizations.

The low energy was why they lost the first period to be sure. They were losing a ton of races to pucks. And Rooney and Backlund aren’t slow. Lucic was not doing what he needs to do - hit, forecheck, force turnovers.

yup it can't be an amateur hockey level tire fire in your zone because lord tanev is off duty . have to find a way as a team to keep opposing players honest in front of the crease in your zone .. can't be an open freeway as often as it has been

Totally. I was close to the glass and saw the exchange. Lucic said something really nasty to the ref and the ref got very upset. I even thought he was gonna get unsportsmanlike. And refs started making calls on the Flames right after that. Kinda stupid and irresponsible to insult officials.

if the Oilers continued playing at home instead of going on that trip they probably would've continued to stink and maybe worse as it went on
It helps to get on the road to start a season . I really don't think that's just blowing sunshine up arses when players & staff say it

This game was better than the last 3 as far as effort goes (but still lacking). The brain farts and mistakes were just stupid though. It's like a switch clicked off on this team in the past 4 games. I don't really know what to make of it.

We didn’t learn anything from the Wideman incident
Build a new damn arena and get the league on our side!

The fact this game was better tells me they are getting out of the funk. Finally on the road and it will feel like the season is actually beginning.

Its time to rule through fear and start running the refs!

Why are you saying this? This assessment is based on looking at a larger picture then the one being discussed lol. We are talking about a 10 game stretch to start the season. No $hit you tend to win more at home vs the road by the time 82 games are done.
The players said that on the Oilers and it seemed to do them some good. So some times the narrative being pushed out by athletes can be accurate.
Anyway all good, we lost your happy, you lost were happy. Move on.

Flames have had the hardest strength of schedule in the league...not my stats
Their opponents thus far have the highest average winning %
Maybe its slightly easier to win at home, quality of opponent is a way bigger factor

Home from the game...
It was the back ref that made the OT penalty call. Not the ref right beside Lindholm but the one all the way back on the devils blueline. Watching him he never had a very good view. Ref glanced down the ice just as the Devil was falling and then raised his arm. Same ref that ignored about 3 blatant penalties in the 3rd period.

I imagine once this team starts playing more regularly they'll get on a bit of a roll.
Or they just suck lol
