Yup, sign before season starts or he is going to test FA
There are very few reasons to wait to the end and not test it
Of course the Flames can alway overpay him after the season but that is also unlikely

I think it just draws out the Flames' best offer and I think it will get done. Still lots of time.

I agree. The numbers thrown out in Free Agency this year would scare me if I was Weegar. And with the depth on our blue line there is nothing stopping him from getting number 4 ice time.
I think it just makes too much sense for both sides to get it done, and if it doesn’t it because he doesn’t want to sign here.

Other than he has a worse season than last year. That seems like a pretty big reason.

That’s the risk he is taking
Regardless, if he has a worse season, the Flames are going to adjust their offer also.

I should also mention that even if it doesn't get done there's a chance he signs here between end of season and UFA ... but the Flames are willing to take that risk. With Huberdeau signing, they feel good about that trade being perceived as a win regardless.

The news from Weegar was that he hoped there would be deal signed before the season starts. Treliving indicated discussions are ongoing.
There really wasn't anything particularly suggesting that a deal was imminent.
The pressure is all on Calgary. We saw what they did with Huberdeau, they immediately signed him to a deal pretty favourable to Huberdeau. I expect Weegar is looking for similar treatment.

Karlsson was traded to San Jose with a year left on his deal and didn't sign a extension until it was close to free agency. This was after they had a disastrous season as well. So its not like its a guarantee Weegar leaves if left unsigned.

Not too worried. I think Tre and his agent are just pushing it to the last minute as both want the most favorable deal. He's a first pairing guy getting his first and probably only payday. Tre is managing a cap situation where a bunch of guys will be making big money in their 30s. I think it will be done a few days before season starts.
Still not opposed to trading him now either for the right deal. In which case - sorry you bought that big dumb truck hopefully you can take it to Boston or Ottawa whatever

Brad doesn't give a lot when discussing contracts, you usually get the we will see from him. When he says things like talks have been positive and we are looking to push is forward and complete this, I think he has a good indication from the Weegar camp it can get done. Weegar's agent has also said he thinks a deal will be done. Weegar sounds optimistic about it.
I think Weegar feels great about how the Flames and Brad have treated him. We are also two weeks from the season starting so lots of time left.

Treliving can't be happy that salary cap projection comes out right in the middle of this negotiation.

Ya but they were conservative at best. I think most players and agents are expecting a quicker acceleration. Can't see that doing anything to these negotiations.

His agent will explain risk to him.
He’s probably got 50m on the table. Guaranteed money.
He can take it. Or play it out and maybe squeeze into 60. Maybe. It could also be zero if he gets hurt. Or 7 like klingberg. Or 45 like Krug last year.
His best bet is take the deal. But his call of course.

If they can't sign him before the season and then he fails to negotiate, I'd have him on the trade market right away. There is no need to wait for the trade deadline. Get a nice player back for him and form your team around someone who wants to be here.
Hopefully, they are able to sign him and it doesn't come down to this.

Who knows what he said or didn’t say behind closed doors. All I am saying it is the best pressure point he has if the Flames and him are close but not quite there. If negotiations weren’t close that probably would have been leaked already. It is all a game when it comes to negotiations.

Oh I agree. He's using the start of the season as a pinch point, which makes total sense.
I just think these things tend to start to become the "truth". What he has said is he doesn't want to negotiate during the season. He hasn't said he isn't interested in re-signing if not signed by the start of the season, or that he will test free agency if not signed by the start of the season.

Not signed by the start of the season, I'd at least explore if you can get a comparable useful top tier player with a bit of term and an acceptable cap hit for him in trade. If there's no good deal there to be made by end of November you play out the season with him and see if he extends at the end of the year or after exploring free agency.

Yes, that is indeed the risk. And to avoid the risk he signs long term. Even with a good season Gaudreau and Kadri ended up with less than they expected. There’s a lot to dislike about free agency for players.

I don't know why there are multiple comments disagreeing with this.
Historically, this statement is most often true.
As such, it has become somewhat of a leverage mechanism for players.
