True. I just always think Paul Byron was a player that virtually every flames fan seemed to like and is the best example of a young player losing a spot to a veteran that seemed like a strange signing at the time.. Byron was younger, faster and seemed like he was ready for a full time spot on the team. The only frustration with Byron leading up to that was his bad luck on breakaways… but we all loved that he seemed to average crating one at least once a game.

I'd argue that Paul Byron was a marginal vet who was overtaken by a young player. He was 26 with two years in the NHL when the Flames released him.

People act like Byron put up 100 points in Montreal...with hindsight you probably keep him (he wasn't waived for Raymond considering he was waived too)

He had a career high 43 points though, certainly not one to worry about all these years later

For sure. But he was a useful player for them for a few years and did well in the playoffs for them. He could play up and down the lineup, was a tenacious forechecker, and, for a time, was easily one of the fastest players in the game. The players the flames kept at the cost of waiving Byron were all gone within a year or so (Bollig, Raymond, Ortio). Not trying to make a big deal out of it… he’s just an example of a player that at the time I definitely did not want to lose on the waiver wire in place of those guys.

It’s tough this season cause I feel the same way about virtually most of the players that are waiver eligible this year… speaks to the depth of the organization. Only so many spots available so it’s inevitable that some quality players will have to pass through waivers. Hopefully the timing is right and the waiver wire is busy enough that none of them are claimed.

There's a reason why the Flames have been hesitant to give Phillips a shot with the big club and it all boils down to size. That's held him back. Without Gaudreau, Sutter may be more comfortable to go with another small player, but that would seem to go against the team he and Treliving built last season. But with that huge hole on the right side, and Phillips being one of the few skilled right shooting RWs in camp, the opportunity is there for him to earn a spot. The alternative is a converted LW or a left shooting player on the right side. Opportunity is definitely there for the taking. Phillips now just has to perform and meet the expectations of the coach.

Phillips was never getting a shot while Gaudreau was here.

None the less, it was a very good point from Haynes because a) Gaudreau is gone now, and b) Phillips has been very good and has earned a real look.

He isn't saying they should have given Phillips better opportunities in the past, he is saying Phillips deserves that shot now. And he is correct.

I don't see any mansplaining going on.

Virtually everyone (you excluded) believe that size is a factor. That is being discussed. If you think size is not a factor in the NHL, cool - argue accordingly.

But dismissing it as mansplaining makes you look like a fool.

I don't think folks are as doubtful of his size as they are about his play away from the puck.

Lots of small guys become effective checking forwards, but very few players can crack an NHL squad with offensive ability alone. Prospects who have a penalty killing pedigree get longer looks. Is Phillips a one dimensional player? no, but he is not known as a 200ft guy. Does he have a legit shot at making the NHL? maybe, but there is no doubt that he is an underdog at this point.

Everything you stated is not rooted in reality. For starters yes Phillips has a penalty killing pedigree - there's a reason he was Captain of his junior team. He was their best PKer. He's also killed penalties for Stockton for Mitch Love. Your comments about his play away from the puck just make zero sense and are exactly what I am referring to about defaulting to generalizations about smaller players.

It’s his only option. He has to be strong enough to roll off direct contact - he’s never going to come close to the strength guys 40-60 lbs heavier.
