The problem here is that if you trade Hanifin, you're right back in the same situation as last year: one injury away from having Zadorov in your top four. The whole point of adding Weegar is to prevent that.
The only reason the Flames appear to have a surplus of defencemen is that they signed Gilbert and Meloche on the first day of free agency. After that they re-signed Zadorov and traded for Weegar, both of whom are clearly better players. If they lose Gilbert or Meloche on waivers, I'm betting they won't bat an eye. That's where they need to be subtracting bodies – at the bottom of the roster, not the top.
