Kessel would bring another guy on the team who has won cups and played in a pressure cooker market for many years. A 1 year low cost low risk deal sounds fine by me. Weegar for 7 years is what it is. The theme for the haters has already shifted from “no one wants to play here” to “they are signing old players to boat anchor contracts”.

I mean, at this point it wouldn't shock me to see Kessel signed for 1 year at or near the minimum. What makes me wonder thouygh would be his usage. Phil thrived once he wasn't "the guy" in Toronto. This has been brought up a million times over his career I'm sure. Once he could settle on a 3rd line in Pittsburgh he was great. Less so in Arizona, but that was a bad team too.
Here? Would be be on Backlund's wing on the 3rd line? Probably not. So that puts him in the top 6. Where once again he'd be looked at as at least "one of the top guys". In a hockey mad market.
How would he do?
All that said, Mangiapane-Kadri-Kessel would probably be fun
I really don't think he'd be looked at as one of the top guys. He's a vet winger. Who was perceived as "the guy" on the 2006 Flames — Iginla, or Tony Amonte?

Thats fair. Just sitting next to one of the big acquisitions of this past summer will probably bring some added scrutiny though. Phil doesn't do well with that.
I liked Kessel a lot earlier in his career, but I wouldn't be very excited by adding him to the Flames at this stage. I feel like Toffoli already fills that space on the team and we don't really need a second one of him.

I like the thought of adding Kessel for the Oiler salt. Oilers fans will be bitter because they were rumored to be in on him first and Calgary always copies them for the players they are interested in. Give almost anyone the choice they would pick to live in Calgary over Edmonton any day of the week

When has he not done well? He has been as consistent of a RWer as there is out there. Regular season and playoffs.
