I know there have been situations where a team is down by two, and they score two with the goalie pulled to tie it. I've also seen situations where you pull the goalie, let in an ENG, and then score one before time expires but still end up losing the game.
It's not what you are asking at all, I just wanted an excuse to post this

Haha -- I was going to include reference to that game, so thank you for doing so. I'm not going to lie -- I had already gone down the rabbit hole of googling "Anaheim Edmonton game 5".

I guess the point is that we see a LOT more ENG nowadays when a team is down by two goals (like last night). To the point where -- unless its the playoffs -- I'm not convinced its even worth trying. I think back in the day teams would "give up" once the other team scored an ENG; I guess part of that was because there wouldn't be much time left for the trailing team to score once let alone twice.

I recall a game where an automatic goal because of a trip on an empty net breakaway (Huselius maybe?) wound up being the GWG.

One of the weirdest end results I can recall.

I think you're overrating Gustav a little bit.

Ah it was even stranger.

4-2, Huselius gets the automatic goal, then LA scores 2 more to make it 5-4, and Huselius scores another empty net goal.
