Long shot may be strong.. but 3 points is a fair bit and the Flames will soon have clinched the division and have nothing to play for, although I'm sure Sutter will be hammering them to finish ahead of Minnesota and St.Louis for home-ice in the conference finals if it comes to that.

If JG wins the scoring title and Matthews continues his goal scoring (or even if not but wins goal scoring as appears certain) it will be really interesting. JG winning soring will shock some people into looking at his overall stats.

Then there are the writers who take into account that absent McDavid the Oilers are a bottom feeder team.

If You Let Johnny Hockey Just Buzz Around In The Offensive Zone, You're Gonna Have A Bad Time

The best hockey player on the planet currently is a fella from South Jersey who loves to hammer ham & cheese sandwiches just as much as he likes to make opposing defensemen question every decision they made in their life that led them to the point of getting embarrassed by Jonathan Hockey. It's not enough for Johnny Ham & Cheese to put up 107 points on the season so far, but he has to make your entire organization look foolish in the process.

Sidenote: Matthew Tkachuk is having the sneakiest 100-point season in league history.

If Johnny wins, the resultant salt tsunami will be glorious. Just glorious.

I think the Johnny Hockey moniker slowly has been dying out.

I will begin using it again in earnest. I think it pisses off Oiler fans.

I saw a list of the highest ES point totals going back 30 years and wanted to see if maybe it lined up with the Hart winner. I thought for sure there should be, but turns out, not so much.

90-91 Gretzky 103 ES - Hart winner - Brett Hull (Was second with 86 ES but 86 goals)
92-93 Lemieux 96 ES - Hart winner - Lemieux
95-96 Jagr 95 ES - Hart winner - Lemieux
92-93 Yzerman 87 ES - Hart winner - Lemieux
21-22 Gaudreau 85 ES and counting - Hart winner TBD
17-18 McDavid 84 ES - Hart winner - Taylor Hall
09-10 H. Sedin 83 ES - Hart winner - H. Sedin

Johnny himself has always been modest about it, primarily because it was a Boston College spoof on the Johnny Football (Manziel) thing.

He had his agent trademark it just to keep it out of the hands of nefarious hucksters, never capitalizing on it.

It sure peeved a bunch of sports media though!

Johnny should absolutely win the hart. Not only is he an undersized player, he is 3 points behind Mcdavid, his team success is driven by his performance just as much, and his even strength numbers are insane! Plus 60 rating and counting. 85 Even strength points is such an amazing accomplishment.

I'll be over the moon if Johnny wins. Reddit (and everywhere else) is flooded with Leafs fans proclaiming the trophy to already be Matthews', no contest, but I think I think it's a really close race and the rest of the league's media seems to have been taking notice of Gaudreau's dominance gradually. We might just be pleasantly surprised.

That should not, and hopefully will not, be part of a voters reasoning.

Since the NHL went to 82 games, there have been a handful of players who have produced 1.00 Even-Strength Points Per Game. These players include names like Jagr, Lemieux, Lindros, Ovechkin, Malkin, Matthews & McDavid.

Of these players, most are barely over 1.00 EVP/G, like Henrik Sedin in 2009-10 who had 83 in 82 games. Only four have scored 1.10 EVP/G or better, and only two have been able to do it over a full season:

1995-96 Jagr 95 EVP 82 GP 1.15 EVP/G
2010-11 Crosby 46 EVP 41 GP 1.12 EVP/G
2020-21 McDavid 68 EVP 56 GP 1.21 EVP/G
2021-22 Gaudreau 88 EVP 80 GP 1.10 EVP/G

The next three are probably Gaudreau, Josi and Huberdeau.

All three had amazing seasons, don't remember a year when so many players played so well.

There was some really good hockey played this season.
