He had a couple of interceptions of passes where he put the puck into really bad areas defensively speaking. He turned the puck over on the NJ goal before they lofted the puck down the ice. Had a pretty good pass on a shift after that

In front of the net on the second goal. He’s made a couple nice interceptions of passes, decent outlets. Didn’t stop the pass across on the NJ goal, but that goal probably shouldn’t have gone in from there. Nothing offensive yet.

About the same, I'd imagine third line C

I honestly thought Mangi would just be a good top 9 forward who’d max out at like 25 goals. I’m both pleased and shocked he hit 30

Was playing much higher in Seattle.

I would imagine either will play on Backlund's wing (shutdown line) or center the third line between Mangiapane and Toffoli.

Monahan has been iffy this season and no one has really stepped up to take the 3C spot decisively, so Jarnkrok's ability to play there is nice insurance in case Monahan isn't up to the task in the playoffs.

Edit: and yes, we have two wingers that have eclipsed 30 goals on our third line. (giddy fan)

Mangiapane's career high was 32 points before this season, 30 goals is a pleasant surprise

I actually think that whole line is looking very good.

Played wing with Gourde in Seattle and Granlund in Nashville. So Backlund might be the closest comparable.

I've always believed Mangiapane would be a 35-40 goal scorer (Cammalleri was always my comparable) but I NEVER would have thought he'd do it like this.... he's not even on PP1

I really don’t know what people expect after a single period, for a combination that’s never played together as a unit.

He had produced at a 27 goal pace since halfway into his rookie year thru to the end of last year. The abbreviated seasons just made it seem less impressive

Faceoffs are one reason. Monahan is very good and Dube just isn’t. Sutter mentions faceoffs a lot, so he seems to value them.

He had 18 in 56 games last year - he was certainly in the neighborhood.

How does Mangiapane rank in ES goals?

Edit: 22nd. He has more PP tallies than I thought.

Devils are actually a good team. Not great, but good and on the rise.

As Sutter said, you don’t have a season with the injuries they have had and go through 6 goalies and come out looking pretty. Difference between these teams is not as great as we’d like to think. That Mercer is surprisingly good.

He’s a very responsible 200 ft middle 6 forward. High IQ and huge compete element. He’s got some finish.
He’s a very good fit for the Flames.
