It took 7 days to re-open Hwy 1 to only two lanes at 60 km/h, with less severe damage, materials more accessible, and not as remote.

Nope. Every route, road and rail, is currently out of service, with no estimate of when it will open again.
Many communities, even in the lower mainland are isolated from one another as well.

For reference:
The repaired area is much much smaller than what BC has to deal with, and way easier conditions. Plus summer was coming, not winter:

This is the TCH around Lytton:
Highway 3 (Hope to Princeton) is probably the least damaged, but even it's closed due to mudslides. Though I'm not even sure if they've really assessed Highway 3 properly, so it's possible it's as bad as the others.

That makes a lot of sense and not surprising. I'm up the hill in hammond bay. It was one of the main things we thought about with the climate changing.

Highway 3 is not a great route to move freight, particularly in the winter. They really need #1 or the Coq open ASAP.

Highway 3 might be the only option for a while.

One thing for sure, this will make for some great Highway Thru Hell episodes - already saw the Reliable Towing 6x6 out there helping.

I was stuck in Terrace for a week before because of a landslide, and that one had nothing on what is going on right now.

The supply chain impact of this will be atrocious for the interior. Luckily for Calgary we can get goods from the South and East.

Perhaps we could utilize some sort of pipe between Alberta and BC to transport food that has been smoothified. Alberta to the rescue!

TCH is also washed out pretty bad I think, along with one of the rail lines.

The various washout images I have seen for TCH and Coq are not easy fixes. They are major construction projects that will require major engineering efforts just to be able to rebuild the road. Very crazy situation and it will be a headache for quite some time.

So can the various levels of government (thinking mostly Feds) contract some cargo planes into service to help mitigate some of the shipping issues for essential goods?

Anyone saying the Coquihalla won't open until late next year are probably being a bit dramatic. Fully reopened? Of course not. Single lane alternating traffic in a couple months? Maybe. Two-way traffic on one carriageway? Before the spring if they push hard through the winter, especially in the areas South of the summit where the weather is warmer. When speed is paramount and you skip the typical tendering/construction process, you can do a lot in a short time.

There's also a ton of gear mobilized in the hills around the highway.

A disaster of monumental proportions. This is starting to look like Canada's version of Hurricane Katrina. My thoughts and well wishes to all those affected.

If we transport through the USA, wouldn't Chinese goods be susceptible to the 25% tariff?
