Yup win-win!
I also think they have the bats to be OK here. Biggio will slide in. They need to focus on the rotation.

Yeah I agree. If Moreno can come up early in the season and play some 3B, and they can fill out the rotation and bullpen with free agents so they can keep Kirk's bat as a DH and back up catcher then the offense should be plenty strong enough.
C Jansen / Kirk / Moreno
1B Vlad
2B Biggio
3B Espinal / Moreno
SS Bo
LF Gurriel
CF Springer
RF Teo
DH Kirk / Rotate PPs
Just need to make sure they bolster the rotation and pen.

Lol when I first read that I didn't clock it was by position and wonder WTF Jansen was doing in the lead off position.
Nevermind...

This would be great.
He’s been solid for a while. He had a rough patch a few years back but straightened it out with SF bigtime.
He did just have his best season by far, so we would be paying for that for sure (Same can be said about Ray though). 30 years old. Consistent, #2 or #3 starter.

I'm liking the deal. One year or so extra for an elite strikeout guy isn't that big a deal. He's not an ace, but he's a solid #2 in my books.

I would guess this likely means the end of Ray coming back.

I think so too. I like Ray, but the Cy Young premium isn’t worth overpaying IMO. Gausman could very well provide similar production at a much more tolerable salary.
I’d like to see the savings applied to go and get a bat to replace Semien in the middle of that order.

All but guaranteed I'd think. Would be really nice to have a veteran ace come in for a season instead. Imagine:
Scherzer
Barrios
Gausman
Manoah
Ryu/Pearson
Would look as good as anyone out there. I'd cross my fingers here.

I don't think Ray will come back, but I certainly don't think this Gausman signing will stop the Jays from trying to bring him back.
If anything this might make Ray want to return to the Jays even more. If he comes back then they have the same stud rotation except for a clear upgrade from Matz to Gausman.
If not Ray though, hopefully the Jays are in on Scherzer, Rodon and Gray. Still need one more good starter IMO and it would be way better to get one on free agency as opposed to trading for one.

Something happened in 2019 with Gausman and he unlocked an ability to rack up a ton of strikeouts, he was hitting 11K per 9 last year, which is Robbie Ray level. Strikeout ability is extremely valuable and the Jays paid for it. I’m pumped.

Better that than the Yankees or Red Sox, or any AL team really.

Nice! Stay out of the AL East. I think Max enjoys NL life. No DH (Unless universal DH become a thing), plus the NL East is pretty damn weak (I know the Braves are WS Champs) but the Phillies, Marlins and Nationals are all mostly bad.

Scherzer to the Mets seems like a really strange fit. They must've backed a dumptruck of cash up to his house. They're not close to being a contender and there will always be Metsy drama.
What a day of signings. Hard to keep up with the chaos.
