I’d be curious how strong the competition was (historical fancy stats wise) playing against Dube tonight as I thought he was our most dynamic center. I doubt Sutter would’ve intentionally wanted him against Detroit’s top 3, but if Dube can build Sutters confidence to the point he’s a legit 1b option I’d be happy to take pressure off of Lindholm, Monahan, and Backlund. Or, even better, increase the internal competition for minutes bringing the whole team up.
Only one game, but I definitely would like to see Mang-Dube-Ritchie together for another game or two before changing it up.

I for one, thought Markström was excellent tonight. I also hope Darryl gives Kyllington a lot more games in a row to establish himself. I honestly believe he just needs games to show his true value. To my eye he’s certainly better than Zadorov and has way higher potential if given a proper chance.

Good win by the Flames. They had some rough patches but the third period was really good. Also nice to see a 50% penalty kill have a clean sheet.
Markstrom was the star of the game but I don't quite think that meant they played poorly, just that he had the best individual performance.
Kylington is way better than Zadorov. I have a ton of respect for Sutter but I have to say I was pretty relieved to see OK put in a position to succeed tonight. Thought he played well and getting 4 shots doesn't hurt either. Tanev looked better with him too.
Not sure what to make of Dube tonight. Thought he kind of struggled overall, but without his great play leading to the second goal it would have been a tougher game. Bad penalty and a lot of plays that lead to turnovers I thought. Not the best showing.
Again that Gaudreau-Lindholm-Tkachuk produces. Even in a weaker performance it makes such a big difference to have a top line that can score.
Go Flames Go!

Darryl the Dman whisperer. I kinda dig the plan though. Keep the 4 to 8 dmen competing to get back in. One has a game where they don't show up next man up gets the chance until he loses it. Keeps the rookies competing with the veterans and keeps everyone's efforts honest if they want to play.

When was the last time the Flames closed out a game like that? Maybe Peters first few games? That was clinical.

Hope I'm not just letting optimism blind me but this is the first time since Bob Hartley that it's felt like there is actual meritocracy in place. Gulutzan played favourites with his vets. Peters would randomly bench Brodie after good games but there was no rhyme or reason to it most of the time, like game 3 against the Avs where he demotes Brodie to third pair despite Brodie's stellar job on MacKinnon. And Geoff Ward used the stick on some guys in a facade of coaching while "his guys" had free reign to do nothing.
Hearing Sutter's pointed comments towards Zadorov in the pregame really shows the value in a real coach. Reminded me of when Hartley scratched Wideman early in 2014. Wideman turned it around right after that and dropped 56 points

This kind of garbage is just a slight cut above "I sure wish we lost to the Wings tonight!"
It was a decent win and the Wings have played well to start the year.

The numbers don't really bear this out... They were out-attempted on the night overall and while they had the advantage in 5v5 scoring chances it was only 20-17. They had a bad start and obviously score effects took over in the third.

Of course you don't want to talk about the mess in your house. But feel free to dump on the flames for your perceived mistakes! Don't worry I won't dump on you and the Blackhawks again.

Huh are we looking at the same numbers? SVA the Flames were the better team in periods 1 and 3, the red wings had a lopsided edge in period 2.

Love to see it boys! Always nice to get the first win of the season, and the Flames historically do well out East so I'm excited for the road trip.
I want to nit pick here though on the save from Markstrom that was featured on their Instagram.

How tf is Valimaki getting boxed out by Larkin in front of his own goaltender?

Still only a 2 goal game from the boys and offense hasn't looked any better tonight than last 2 games (probably worse actually) markstrom outplayed his last 2 games and was the difference. Liked the pk. Anderson was running around a lot in his own zone early, seemed to be chasing the play, I hope he isn't getting tired from increased workload already. Mony playing with scrubs and still looking solid, fingers crossed that he is 100 % healthy and just getting warmed up. Lindholm has scored half our goals so far (excluding EN), hope we can get some more goals.
