Angela Price on Instagram: “Just checked my DM’s. Don’t worry guys things will make more sense soon”
Sounds like some sort of deal.

Seems like you have an opinion on the cost-benefit analysis of this situation.

If that’s true, Flames and Gio screwed up. They should have had Eric Francis interview Gio and have him say that he “might” retire if selected by Seattle because he wants to retire a Flame and doesn’t want to be used by Seattle at the trade deadline for an asset.
Whether it’s true or not, it would at least put some uncertainty into the decision for Seattle and give Treliving some leverage back in the negotiations.

There are 2 Gios we have seen
- the one that is playing with a top shelf partner he can trust, like Brodie or Tanev, and is a top defender
- the one that plays with young guys who are still maturing, where he plays a more conservative game and doesn’t distinguish himself from the pack
Both of those guys are 38 now and nobody defeats Father Time
It’ll be interesting to see if Seattle takes a guy like that, still very, very good, but on the back 9 for sure, for one year

I think at least 50% of the reason they take Gio is for TDL value and if he at least shows he’s got some game left, that will be just fine for them.

That’s fair. Unless they are doing extremely well at the TDL !
I’ll say it again, the opportunity to have 81.5 of cap without dead cap and bad value for money is a distinct advantage. A shrewd GM should be able to have a real good shot at constructing a playoff team, given the state of the other teams in the Pacific

Or even just to take him and offer him around while retaining 50% of his cap
I'd think a ton of teams would be interested at 3.375 on a 1 year deal
If I'm a contender I'd rather have a full year than just at the deadline if that was an option
Seattle would be smart, if this is their plan, and even tell Giordano when they take him, and ask for a list of a few teams where hed prefer to go, would be a quick way to build goodwill from the players around the league early
I'm sure he'd rather only move once in a year, rather than having to relocate twice

That seems like a reasonable cost-benefit analysis.

A fully motivated Price could probably lug them to the playoffs on his own.

So, you assume since Fleury aged well, so will another goalie?
Price has had some injury concerns, and most importantly is owed about $52M over the next 5 years.
It’s a huge risk, with some chance of working out well.
With so many good goalies available, it’s likely a risk you don’t take.
Fleury was signed for only two more years, apples and oranges.

Why would they protect a UFA in place of another player?
They may even have a framework in place, but won’t finalize it until after expansion.
Note that virtually none of the big UFA’s signed. It basically allows their team an additional expansion protection spot.

With this logic we'd have to pay them to select Giordano.

This would be a failure in my opinion. Spending assets to protect Allen? Just let him go… GM’s are dumb.

The Athletic reporting that the Bruins left Nick Ritchie exposed to protect DeBrusk who the Bruins are expected to continue to shop after the expansion draft.
Also reporting the Blackhawks have left Zadarov exposed.
And also reporting that Max Domi was exposed to protect Eric Robinson

Depends.....10.5M is a massive chunk of AAV/cap room.
If he has determined the Habs are better off with that room than with what Price provides for it, then Bergevin has done the right thing for the team. Fans will disagree but he cant worry about them.
This has all the feels of the Subban/Weber decision and that was most definitely the right call.
If nothing else, the man is not afraid of making bold moves.

I’m going off the assumed rumour that Price is protected via deal as per the post I responded to. If “everything will make sense” according to his wife, that doesn’t sound like they’re just exposed for Seattle’s picking. That’s what I’m getting at, if both are protected vi a deal.
