Lower AAV than I expected, was thinking 6+, but he's probably happy to get the full 8 years. Should be a good contract for the next 4 years anyway.

I think id rather bury Koski this year and have the extra cap space come in next year when Nurse needs his deal.

Ah yes, we all know you have to judge an 8 year contract on the buyout right when its signed!

The total dead cap for the Oil if they buyout Kostkinen and Neal is going to be $5,670,417 for the next 2 years (combining their buyouts to the Lucic and Sekera dead cap) then down to just the remaining $1,916,667 for Neal over the next 2 years.

They save $875K on RNH.
Replacing Neal costs $750 - $1M
Signing a backup to replace Koskinen typically costs about $2.5M
Let's be generous and say that they save a total of $4M on those 3.
Replacing Barrie will cost more than the $3.75M he got last year. So by the time they have replaced those 3 plus re-signed RNH, they might have a couple million left over to go nuts with.
Woohoo.

On another note though, this is classic Holland kicking the can down the road and making RNH and his cap the problem of the poor sap who comes after him.

That would be the smart play. They are just about to get out of the dead cap space that the previous regime left.

Except they have Alex Stalock already as backup for 785k.
Sitting at 16mil cap space after signing RNH and with Neal and Koski on the roster.

You mentioned those buyouts would cost 3.4 so I was simply adding that to the dead cap already there to paint the entire picture. The dead cap on the Oilers will exceed that of Nuge for the next 2 years

Would love nothing more than the Oilers to go into next season with Smith-Stalock as their tandem

Yup if they go that way.
Won’t exceed Drai like the poster originally thought.
Not sure I want either bought out anyways

Yup. All they need are 3 more good forwards, 3 top 4 dmen and a starting goalie. Tons of cash.

Bit of a 180 from some Oiler fans today from when it looked like he was leaving.

They have Klefbom and Nurse in their top-4, so they only need two top-4 defencemen, and yeah a couple more top-6 forwards and a #1 goalie. I can't imagine Stalock will actually be their back-up. I would expect to see Smith sign a 1-year deal, alongside a new goalie coming in to replace Koskinen.
The Oilers are not poorly positioned this summer, especially if they can unload Neal or Koskinen in a trade rather than a buyout (harder done than said) - but even with the buyouts, they're in a good spot.
The real challenge will be whether or not they Oiler their off-season like they typically do. They have the opportunity to take a step this summer, but we'll see where it goes.

I am shocked at how many kudos they are getting here.... he will be 36 when this ends and he's been a career 59 point per season player even through his peak years and he really only plays the wing effectively. I think in about 4 years this is gonna be an albatross. But for next 3 season or so it'll be fine.

With goalies who played 15 games or more Smith was 2nd overall in goals saved above expected/60, 2nd in save percentage above expected, 2nd in high danger save percentage, 7th in overall save percentage. The Oilers were 9th overall in team save percentage.
Do you think Smith will have another career year this year?
The Oilers goaltending will almost certainly be worse this year, and likely only matches last year of the Oilers go out and drop big money on a goalie.

I think Klefbom may be done, which was included in Stangs cap available. I may be mistaken though.
Their real issue is they won't have epic Mike Smith goaltending to bail them out, and I don't know who would be available to replace him.
