After reading the ATL I just realized that the Oilers fanbase is the most self entitled, least knowledgible whiny fan base in the league. They deserve nothing, they deserve to watch McDavid leaving as he throws his Oilers jersey in the dumpster and laughs on the way out the door "Thanks for the 10's of millions $$$$$s", he'll say, them promptly throw in a dive for old times sake.
Then it gets worse when you read their King, the criminally stupid, and emotionally crippled David Staples crying about the reffing, and how tired the heroic Oilers were.

Connor McDavid, 5. He came out skating fast and paid for it, getting hit hard by Nikita Nesterov in the first. The Flames resorted to hooking and holding, while the refs relished a metal meal as they ate their whistles. He kept driving hard deep into the third but no luck. He made major contributions to just three Grade A chances, about half his seasonal average.

In my peewee herman voice - "Hey Staples, if you love him so much why don't you marry him, ha ha"

Jack Michaels, Louie DeBrusk, 9: They are the fire and ice of Edmonton Oilers broadcasts, with Michaels’ hot delivery and DeBrusk’s cool takes. It took me awhile to warm up to both announcers early in their Edmonton broadcast careers, but both have come into their own as outstanding professionals. Michaels unfailingly makes the play sound exciting. He sometimes ramps it up to supernova levels. DeBrusk is now far more likely to diagnose in accurate terms what went wrong on goals against, something he had earlier been reluctant to do. At the same time, he provides measured and insightful commentary throughout the game, with his fundamental decency and fairness as a person shining though. Oilers fans are exceptionally well served with this broadcast partnership.

Ugh, really he's now giving game scores to Commentators. Can he get anymore fanboyish? Oh wait

The Edmonton Oilers, playing their third game in four nights, ran out of gas in a 3-1 loss to the desperate and rested Calgary Flames.
Edmonton has its chances, including 5-alarm shots by Dominik Kahun and Leon Draisaitl in the first, and another by Kailer Yamamoto in the third, but Calgary goalie Jacob Markstrom thwarted them each time. The big goalie was the difference this game.
|
No Virginia errrr David, You know what was a big difference in this game. The fact that your two player team got stuffed tonight, Tippet got out coached, the Flames secondary players were far better, and Smith saved them from utter embarrassment.
In a 7 game series where depth takes over, hitting goes up, and refs put their whistles away the Oilers are no better then Team Japan in the EA sports hockey franchise that you always pick to play against team Canada when you want to set a goal scoring achievement. No Edmonton, unlike a video game you can't turn off line changes.

^ The Oilers are getting great performances from their best players, great goaltending, playing good defence, excellent on the power play.
Literally, this is about as good as this team can be.
They are still only 12th overall.
That being said, 12th out of 31 is literally their 2nd best season in the last 31 years. So, it’s no wonder that they think they are doing pretty well.

I like how he has to say that the "big" goalie was the difference. No Staples, the better goalies was the difference.
Everything he writes is pure propaganda.

Yes he did, and got a lot of ice time. It was hard to read his number as he spent most of the time laying on his back.

It's funny how John Shannon said the Flames might have better forward depth as if that were some sort of bold statement.
The Oilers had four forwards play over 20 minutes (McDavid, Yamamoto, RNH, and Draisaitl). Draisaitl played 29 minutes (by the way, he was a -3 on the night).
Meanwhile the Flames were led by Lindholm at 18:55. All of the forwards other than Robinson played between 11:56 (Nordstrom) and 18:55 (Lindholm).
And I don't even think the Flames' forward depth is that good. They're playing guys like Ritchie and Robinson on a regular basis. Even guys like Froese, Rinaldo, and Simon have made the lineup. It's just that the Oiler's depth is terrible.

First goal was 100% on the proclaimed (by an oilers fan) PK specialist Crysaitl. Pass to nowhere in his own zone, then didn’t pick up lindholm. Yet he was on in the last minute against the jets yesterday with an empty net because he played on the PK,
Not because the garbage oilers were trying to pad his stats. Guess he needs more practice.

At least with no fans they don't have men kissing grandmothers on the kiss cam every 5 minutes, and they won't be clogging up the traffic circles with stop lights on the way home. They're all still at home, where there's no toothpaste.

You know the Flames had a good game when you don't hear McDavid's name by the play by play announcer. He was a non factor, completely shut down.

Fun game to watch. Nice to see the boys snag one and keep the probably-false hope alive. I'm ready for heartbreak but enjoying each win. Excellent games by Markstrom, Lindholm and Tkachuk.
Best part was listening to the homer announcers get all wet over every Smith save and the lone goal, than the dejection in their voices when the Flames scored. I don't mind homer announcers for that reason; the dejection when something bad happens to their team is always hilarious.

100%. The way Lindholm glances over at Tkachuk, and Tkachuk facepalms tells you these guys have discussed Francis and his stupid questions.

The Oilers were just straight up bad. Can't imagine where the team would be without McDavid. The fact they are firmly in the playoffs and we are not is absurd. FFS how could the Flames not figure ottawa out?
Smith kept them in it. Their only goal from Neal... Gross. Dude still loves to troll the Flames.

Seriously though... Brett Ritchie needs to get back on the 4th line. He ruins so many plays for his linemates. I would honestly rather see Robinson there. Or please bring up Phillips and give him a shot... I'm not saying drop him out of the line up, but he's struggling so badly in that role.
|
I soooo the the “play dies on his stick” cliche but it sure did last night.
I agree about Gaudreau. His classic play when he started was to go fairly deep and make a nice diagonal area pass for Monahan or Wideman to skate into . It didn’t have to be threaded or right on the tape of a stationary guy, because the recipient could skate into the puck. During the slump it seemed like he was, at best parallel and the puck recipient was standing still. And then they wondered why it was getting picked off, or the shot was blocked, or the puck wasn’t in the perfect shooting spot (too close or just out of reach).
