I hope the Flames aren’t buying but could be middlemen if they want to absorb some salary retention in return for a pick

Actually, the Avs with Greg Sherman as GM.
I think it was a little like with Rittich and the Leafs, where Berra had a good game against them which seemed to influence the overpay.

I think it's a pretty good return for a guy who's likely going to be the 3rd string guy for his new team. All the best to him.

I am shocked they got that much...people expected a 2nd for a UFA backup goalie?
The Avs guy on the fan last week was doubted anyone would even take him

The Leafs are desperate for a goalie since Anderson was put on LTIR yesterday and Campbell is the lone NHL-caliber goalie in their stable right now.
The only teams with spare goalie capacity are Carolina (one of Reimer, Mrazek, Nedeljkovic), Detroit (Bernier, Greiss), Florida (Dreidger), and Buffalo (Hutton, Ullmark).
Rittich isn't a seasoned playoff vet, but none of the available goalies are any better (besides Carolina's trio). He is also slightly younger than Campbell and has played twice as many NHL games.
Especially if the Flames are retaining salary, Treliving should have been pushing harder a second rounder or a conditional second (e.g. based on the Leafs making it out the 1st round)

Seems like a great guy, and one who loved the organisation. I wish him all the luck in the world for the rest of the season, especially against the oil.

I will miss Rittich, and I hope he does well... when he signs somewhere else than Toronto (or Edmonton, or Vancouver, or Montreal, or Winnipeg, or Ottawa.. .or Anaheim, or... well, you get the picture).
Still think he has starter upside, if he can just find a bit of consistency.

What a great UFA signing he was for us. Hope he carves out a long career in the league!

Maybe not "buying", but it maybe enough space to grease a hockey trade through.

Don't forget the quarantine issue. I don't remember if the Canadian teams were able to work out a reduced quarantine for traded players recently but any goalie picked up from the US wouldn't be available right away. So if TO is desperate and the market is limited in Canada maybe Rittich could have fetched an extra late round pick.

Exactly. For a few years in the Feaster and early Treliving era I hoped the Flames would make use of their cap space to acquire picks. Hopefully the GM can find something to make it work this time by facilitating a deal for a cap strapped team.

Hasn't Campbell won like 11 straight games? He's putting up starter numbers.
Rittich wasn't acquired to be the starter, he was acquired as a backup. I don't realistically think you can trade a second for a backup goalie.

Easy to say...push hard and they go with the other guy. Then what? lose him for nothing.
Taylor Hall and Lazar only got a 2nd and an mediocre player in return
I was wondering if he was actually movable...guy has kinda dropped the ball under any real pressure in the league

Or, maybe, this was the best value that could be extracted. Crazy stuff, I know.

Sad. Loved the player and the person.
Was hoping Brad would fleece someone and get a 2nd, but third is the going rate.
I think he was loyal to the Flames since they signed him as an undrafted player, so I hope he doesn’t take the trade personally. It’s just business, and it he should have seen it coming the day they signed Markstrom.
I will feel less dirty cheering for the Leafs in the playoffs now.

The quarantine was reduced to 7 days, so it’s maybe a one game difference for a backup goalie. And the market to sell Rittich to is limited just the same way. There wasn’t exactly a bidding war.

Best memory of Rittich was the early celebration when Gaudreau scored on breakaway during OT in Denver. I happened to be at that game, but of course didn't see that until much later.
Worst memory was him picking up Smith's habit of occasionally staring at his defensemen after a goal.
Best of luck in TO.
