Players don’t get a pass, but if the coach is just going to say they need to try harder or care more, he’s wrong. I think they are trying and that they do care. But they’re either not good enough to succeed in the system Ward has implemented, or they’re not good enough period. I actually think it’s a combination of the two.
The job of the coach is to get the best out of the talent that’s there. Ward isn’t doing that.

2-1 Oilers, 3 minutes left in the first period and the Flames had the momentum. Backs just straight up tackles a guy in the neutral zone on an absolute nothing play and 30 seconds later it’s 3-1 on the PP goal heading into the intermission. An absolute back breaker of a goal.

Not exactly, when the score was 2-1, they were pushing. No one knows what will happen if Backlund didn't take that penalty.

The Flames play (when they "play") a terribly structured game. It's so terribly structured it's impossible to tell what the structure is, other than "Don't make a mistake". Their timidity costs them.
Then there is the s-l-o-w decision-making, resulting in blocked shots, passes etc. Throw in a little desperation and pucks get chucked all over the ice, usually nowhere near anyone or the goal.
If anyone can identify the "system", I'm all ears!

I've seen enough.
This team is so fragile mentaly that it's sad. One of the biggest games of the season and they crater under pressure. They can't handle adversity and changes should be made and that starts with the coach. I don't think Ward is the THE reason for where we are but it looks to me like the players don't believe in the system Ward wants to use and they have quit on him, like they've done with other coaches. We keep firing coaches and we end up with the same results.
I doubt that it happens during the season but there needs to be a change to the core of this team at the forward position. Tre added to defence and goaltending in the off season but failed at addressing the core issues. Maybe he's tried but couldn't find the right teams to trade with, but we can't win with a core that is pillowy soft. No leadership and certainly no direction.
Talk is cheap and that is all we get from this team.
The Oilers are the team we have to catch to make the playoffs and I have my doubts if they can do it.

They lost 7-1 they sucked throughout.
They were raked over the coals all week (or longer?) about not starting on time and not caring and there was nothing...
I remember when losing to the oilers meant something and you’d show some fight. Literally zero gloves dropped in the third is despicable.

Gaetan Haas of all people. Fourth liner.
Of course he also scored the GWG on Friday, so clearly he’s someone you need to tackle on a nothing play.

Not really. Backlund has taken selfish penalties each of the last two-three years, especially against the Oilers.

Don’t expect them to

They should have recovered from something like that, good teams do.

Waiting excitedly to hear Wardo's press conference where he takes no responsibility and swears at the players while blaming them entirely for their complete and utter confusion about what to do and where to go. Pretty depressing.

I remember, way back, being at a game where the Flames lost 10-1 to the Oilers, and 10 different Oilers scored (iirc). After the game the one highlight was Todd Simpson, who was captain at the time,I believe. He wasn't on the ice for single goal against. I don't know that there's any sort of similar silver lining to this one. McDavid alone was enough to demolish the Flames. When was the last time the Flames had a real laugher? They just don't seem to have the jam to put games away.
