This is one of those seasons you want a chip and a chair for the playoffs IMO. One pretty average team from this div is heading to the semi finals and you never know when it gets to that point.

Make the big moves in the offseason

I can see where you’re coming from but with low confidence and lack lustre efforts we will miss playoffs. Watch.

watching...I doubt it though

Oilers are three games under .500
Sens are the Sens
Vancouver is .500 because they played the Sens three times

Despite their poor play the Flames aren't even behind other than games played

Ward got a chance to instill his system during the 5 day break.

Bit silly to say Ward is trash. I get it, he's not some future hall of famer or anything but he has given us some solid numbers for his tenure. He came in after a crappy start to the season last year and had us a solid pace, made the playoffs and gave us a solid showing against Dallas (weird goalie swap aside, but would putting a shaken Talbot out there be good either? whose to say) with with some unfortunate timing on last minute goals that turned the series.

We were looking really solid for a bit there. Then that 5 day break came in and threw off the mojo. I don't understand why breaks destroy us. I don't think our coach is so heinous at adjusting that he doesn't recognize changes need to be made. He shakes the lines up, they have a solid pp strategy, the 5 vs 5 strategy was looking good when they execute it right, but end of the day its on the players to make it happen. It's painful as a fan to see professional athletes not bring that competitive nature and drive. Too much coasting, lots of moments where "finishing your check" became slide gently into them to bump them and skate away, to much stationary position in the O zone and sooooo many odd man rushes... I hope they bring the drive and energy come Saturday because this was tough to watch.

You could look at short training camp plus 3 games, followed by nearly a week off, as giving other teams time to play at competition levels while your team is on the sidelines, not near getting in game shape (both physically and cohesively as a team)

After this 4 game stretch vs Tor and Mtl, both good teams, 17 of 19 are against lesser teams (Van, Wpg, Edm, Ott), the ones the Flames need to beat

Patience

I’ve cooled down a bit since the game. Honestly I thought they played well in both Toronto games (outside of one bad period) and lost both by one goal. They didn’t get completely outclassed in those games, they were in both of them until the end.

I also thought the started well tonight, but completely folded when a few bad calls and bounces didn’t go their way. Tonight was the first game all season where I didn’t like their game outside of the first half of the first period.

It’s much too early to be panicking. 6 games played and they’ve been in every game except tonight. It happens. Montreal and Toronto are good teams. These aren’t losses to the Senators or Oilers.

Woof. The difference between the compete level of the Oilers top players and the Flames top players was a complete 180 tonight.

The Oilers might be a pretty incomplete team, but they sure are trying a lot harder than the Flames players seem to be.

I ended up shutting the game off after the 2nd.

I'll start watching when they start trying.

You mean the Oilers star players who did nothing other than on the PP and dont backcheck? I'm guessing you didn't see the first two periods of that game.

Their great compete has them 3-6

Dube is good and in fairness, there are two teams on the ice every game, and the team has lost to the better ones while he has been unavailable

McDavid might be one of the worst leaders in the NHL frankly.

For someone SO talented with seemingly a limitless amount of energy, he seems to exclusively use his skillset to cheat offensively. He should go the Steve Yzerman route and dedicate himself to being a great defensive player while sacrificing some points, but he clearly won't.

With his speed and tenacity he could set such a strong example for the rest of his team... yet he chooses to be one of the laziest 2 way centres in the leagues.

So how many games do we give it before we know what this team is, if we don't already, and how close is that to the line where we miss the playoffs?

After the next Mtl game, 17 of the next 19 are against 4 lesser teams. It’s not a normal season

The Flames won’t go anywhere until they have a real coach. It has to start there. Hiring some mediocre coach isn’t a option either. They need a well established coach that will push these guys and not hesitate to be like Torts and sit guys for poor play.

Still unreal how his contract was extended in the off season. He’s a nice guy but terrible coach. When he pulled Talbot against Dallas during that 3-4 goal frenzy and threw Riddick in, that’s where I would of fired him on the spot. They weren’t even bad goals.

Leadership is another big issue. Boys just aren’t getting fired up. I love Gio but his age is really showing how and he just doesn’t seem to be able to fire the boys up. As others have said, Markstrom should of been in net against the habs for the first game.

Last but not least the flames will go no where playing 2 of 3 periods. No consistency at all. I rarely tune into flames games anymore. I’d rather watch Edmonton play as at least it’s fun watching McDavid even though their team won’t go anywhere either with mediocre goaltending.

People were preaching Flames depth, they lose a few in a row and suddenly Dillon Dube is the difference.
