I doubt ownership was like "we were one game away from the Conference Finals, we better slow down and see what we have here".

Hard to see at this point in time how Jim recovers from this and salvages the off-season. Perhaps a big trade for an available dman, but he will have to give up assets to do that. Something he could have avoided by just signing Toffoli and Stecher.
I acknowledge it wasn't by design, and I expect they will still screw it up...probably their own version of a Hamonic trade. Letting Stecher go does seem silly.

I just think they are going to end up better off having not blown their brains out for guys ~30yo who will be on the down swing by the time this team actually enters its 'window'.

In 2 years all of their bad money is gone (and there is a lot of it). They are too poorly constructed to capitalize on Hughes/Petterson's ELCs.

Honestly that is a more than they can afford already. The Flames adjustments this off season have to come in the form of a trade. If they want to be cap compliant with their current roster (after the RFAs get signed) they will need to move money. Anyone who thinks they are in on any UFAs before a trade are day dreaming.
On top of this, it's extremely difficult to move cap this year. The Flames aren't bringing in someone new without moving out a good player.

I have never implied this. But I will assert that JT Miller will not come anywhere close to his +70-point explosion, and I doubt very much that Pearson eclipses his total. I think the Canucks as a whole will have greater difficulty scoring this season, and will struggle substantially to keep pucks out of their zone, and out of their own net.

No, yes, yes. We mostly agree.

Yes, some of their cap issues go away in two years. But then, they will be paying full boat for Pettersson, Highes and Demko. So, nothing really gained.

All they are doing is letting a couple years slip by. Pettersson's and Hughes' ELC years.

Miller is me guy who could easily duplicate his numbers, if Petterson and Hughes keep improving.

Petterson is that good, as is Hughes.

But Vancouver as a whole will be weaker. They rode a hot goalie in the playoffs to win a few rounds, but that’s not likely to happen again. They will be in tough to make the playoffs.

And it looks like they don’t have much cap to spend.

The ELC years for those two were never supposed to be the "Window" years. We knew that because of the dead weight. Our real window will open if we've drafted as well as we think we have. When we have guys like Rathbone, Rafferty, Hoglander and Podkolzin playing regular roles on cheap contracts in the next few years. If they don't develop, then we never stood a chance anyhow.

Keep dreaming the dream.

I know the ELC years were never supposed to be the window, but that doesn't mean that it is a good idea to simply foresake them. Especially when Pettersson and Hughes DID excel early.

Just a waste.

But I am sure that everything will be fine and the 50 year drought will end one day soon.
