Yeah Chayka looks bad but we also don’t have all the facts. Not the first time in recorded history someone has had a change of heart.

I've never understood this line of thinking...especially for NFL players without guaranteed contracts. Owners/organizations ruthlessly exploit their leverage all of the time. I have no problem with a human being taking advantage of their own leverage once they have earned it.

I'm no fan of Chayka, but I'm always inclined to favour the human being in these situations. No matter how great a person a manager/executive/CEO/owner may be, and no matter how great the promises they make may be, they are inherently unreliable (circumstances inevitably change); individuals need to evaluate their own circumstances and do what is best for themselves and their families.


As for the Chiarelli mention...LOL if true, but it's probably just Matheson doing him a favour.

This is speculation, but reading between the lines I think the extension Chayka signed was a similar situation to Treliving in that he wanted more autonomy. I think there was a lot of owner meddling during his first contract with the Coyotes. I think initially the owners were honoring this agreement to give him more autonomy. But the Hall negotiations is likely when the contention started. I think the owners were pressuring Chayka to re-sign Hall for more than Chayka was comfortable. When it became clear to Chayka that the meddling was going to continue, he started considering other opportunities. The request to negotiate with third parties was more the end than the beginning. If Chayka didn't have these clauses in his contract, hopefully this is a valuable lesson for him. If these clauses are in his contract he may have a case for a breach of contract.

Then you resign. Take some time and resurface elsewhere. This sounds like a bitter employee/contractor who signed a contract and it didn’t go their way. So the bided time until a better job came up, was part of a lie to current employer, and quit when the employer exercised their rights.

It is totally his right to do this, but from a reputation perspective it wasn’t handled well at all. May bite him, may not time will tell.

David Blitzer and Joshua Harris, owners of the Devils, also run the Philadelphia 76ers and Crystal Palace of the English Premier League, and are serious bidders for the New York Mets. My theory is that this is some kind of analytics/sports science/leadership position across some or all of those (potential) platforms. But I’d be lying if I claimed I knew the exact role.

Another of my theories is Chayka knows how to speak “ownership language.” Ask any GM — they will tell you managing up is more critical than ever. He started an analytics company. He and his wife own 14 Wendy’s franchises. He played a big role in convincing Alex Meruelo to buy the Coyotes (a major reason Meruelo is so angry).
