When the playoffs come and the games tighten up and defense actually matters, and penalty calls are rarer these moves might haunt the Oilers.

They've made their team a better regular season team, but my gut tells me that if they make the playoffs they'll be a disaster.

After only being in the playoffs once in like 15 years just even getting there would be something, as sad as that is. Especially as at the beginning of the year the consensus was that they'd miss again.

Yeah and what will be funnier if they do make it because I'm a silver lining guy. Is a team that's gotten the majority of their scoring from two people. Has a rookie come up and score at a elite level, having a record power play, is going to show to be unsustainable and will go back to being a 70 point team next year.

Athanasiou has been on the ice for 21 even strength goals for, and 60 even strength goals against.
Also has been on the ice for 6 SH goals against. Should fit in well on Edmonton there (Draisaitl 10, Klefbom 9, RNH 8, McD 8).

I don't think that Athanasiou will be long on McDavid's wing, although they will start him there. The way that McDavid plays is to go in full steam and have trailers pick up his garbage after a shot. If someone is there skating as fast as he is, the second player will end up behind the net with McDavid instead of looking for rebounds.
I would guess that he just pushes Neal down to the third line, where he will be a threat to not achieve the necessary 21 goals to help out his old team.

Agreed. Athanasiou loves to carry the puck and attempt one-man rushes. That is not acceptable behavior if you are playing wing with McDavid.

Damn it, first Yamamoto breaks out and now they get one of the fastest players around not named McDavid or Barzal.
Hopefully the Oil can't re-sign him without crippling the rest of the roster. Athanasiou tearing it up would be tolerable in that sense.

I just keep looking back at the return and I'm stunned that anyone is saying this is good for the Oilers. TWO seconds? I'd be concerned about giving up one second for AA. He's got some skills, but he reminds me a lot of Duclair, a guy that was on his last legs until this season. He's very far from being a complete NHLer, but he can skate, I'll give him that.
It's quite the steal for Detroit. Yzerman knows what he's doing.

He may score a few PP points by being in on two on ones. Hopefully not enough to win games but enough to get a nice $6M or so contract.

Seriously I guess this is another test for Tippett.
