Now that Treliving has $ signs in his eyes let’s hope he uses the money wisely and doesn’t throw it away like a drunken sailor!

Frolik will be 32 years old next month. Not ancient, mind you, but the wheels are slowing. He might get one more NHL contract in the off-season, but it'll likely be on a PTO/value deal.
More likely he heads back to Czech.

That is likely the point of improving the roster

It's the beginning of the final roster build for this season.

Frolik's salary this year was I believe 3 million, and half of that has been paid out, so it's a 4th round pick for a warm body actually in the lineup for about 1.5 million.
I gotta agree though, this deal was not out there this summer. Getting a 4th without retaining salary is good return, but getting it now is even better IMO.
If you're going to make cap moves like this you want to get them done as early as you can IMO.
|
It is for the cap hit not the actual dollars, so the key is the freeing up of $2.17MM (per cap friendly) in cap space, not the $1.5MM in actual dollars.

I'm happy for him. I think he could have done better with more ice time, but you need to actually out work your competition. Good move for the player and both teams. Good solider (on the ice) for Calgary.
Good luck Fro!!

Frolik grew up idolizing Jagr...
Frolik's last game with CGY: vs Chicago, at the Saddledome, on Dec 31 (2019)
Jagr's last game with CGY: vs Chicago, at the Saddledome, on Dec 31 (2017)

If BUF doesn't manage to turn their ship around, they can probably flip him for the same or better (with salary retained) at the deadline. They might manage to improve his stock price with time in the middle six.
Great deal for Calgary, cap space is great whether they use it now, accrue more for near the deadline, or never. Frolik's value wasn't going to get any higher here.

Maybe the chance to play with Eichal and boost his stats was appealing.

Frolik was good for us. His agent was a ###### though.

I would bring up Czarnik, he deserves it.

I would like to see Gawdin given a look. I like Czarnik but Gawdin is a bit more defensively sound and could pull some of the slack left by Frolik.

Definitely, looked good before he got hurt, and has been playing well down there. He has earned it.

The knock on Gawdin was his skating. Has that improved. Can he keep pace now.

I'd argue he has more value now that his contract is expiring. If he's someone you want on your team for a few more years, he will come with a far lower contract next year.
