Eric Staal is meh? He's cheap, he's signed through next season, he has 26 points in 34 games this season, he scored 42 goals in 2018... he'd be the perfect top-6 centre this team needs.
Honestly, I think the Flames would be incredibly smart to target him.

We need more top end talent, but not at the expense of yet another great draft pick.
Glad the Flames avoided this, they need to retain their 2020 1st round pick for a top heavy 2020 draft.
If we want to grab a decent rental, wait for the TDL and get Toffoli or another pending UFA winger that will not break the bank. We have the opportunity to sign Hall without paying any assets other than money. If it's in the cards, it's in the cards.
I want to see how the team plays under Ward before making any big moves like this.

I'm surprised arizona went all in on a rental (maybe rental) I don't t think their window has even opened yet and they are giving up a good prospect and a first seems like the type of move that sends them backwards considering I dont even think they will make the playoffs this year

Stone is a player that would've been worth breaking the cap bank and raiding the prospect pool for. Hall most certainly is not even if it ends up costing a 1st and either another 1st or 2nd in the 'worst' case scenario+3 middling prospects.

If Arizona freefall (not saying they will), what are the chances they flip him again and get similar value at the deadline. Say at least the 1st rounder back.

That pick is likely gonna have a lot more value this season. I wouldn’t be happy with that kind of trade.

Agreed. Such a piss off that minny botched that trade last season.

lol that'd be awesome, get your division rival to give up assets for a rental, then sign him in the summer...

Staal - signed a two year deal in the summer, includes NTC
Zucker - NTC kicked in this summer.
Palmeri - Devils will want some veteran leadership on their team. Has NTC
Toffoli - most likely guy to be traded on this list. He is fairly average though. Far cry from Hall and not a guy id want to spend assets on.
Saad - signed for next year, unlikely to be moved
I don’t see any of these happening for the Flames tbh and that’s probably a good thing. I don’t want to spend assets on average players. We have enough guys like that already.

But are the Wild going to move those kinds of players with how well they've been doing lately? They're the definition of hot and cold, causing too much mediocrity for them to even make any moves. I guess they tried moving Zucker last year for an additional first, but it doesn't seem like Zucker is on the table anymore. I guess we'll see. I would absolutely pay a 1st round pick if the Flames got Staal.

Blah!
Whelp, there's always July 1st.
I just hope we don't spend significant assets on more mid-tier players. Treliving has wasted far too many assets in smaller trades with no payoff. If he doesn't want to pay the price to acquire elite talent, then best to just stay conservative and continue to build through the draft.

I’m not sure why he thought it was such a brilliant idea to sink a 1st and two 2nds into a #4 defenceman but then pulls up short on actual high end talent.
If Hall didn’t want to sign an extension, then yeah - let ARZ blow their load on a rental...but if he extends in Arizona (which makes sense if he wants the 8th year), then yeah...I’m not too happy as a Flames fan.
|
Please list all the wonderful division swinging trades the competition in the Pacific made since the Carolina/Calgary trade?
LV - Stone, ended up with worse record than the season before and are even with Flames now. Put them over the salary cap.
SJS - nothing to be said here
Van ?
Edm ?
LA ?
Ana ?
These BIG trades almost never have any true value. Stone is a good player but does he really make the difference for $9 M?

I'd certainly give less now than what I would have given less season (player is older, window is a year less, etc.) but I still think he'd slot just about anywhere really well.

I expect Mangy and Kly are worth about a 1st and a 3rd.

But why would Minny even trade him unless a team overpays? Flames and Minny are similar point wise, and Staal has another year left on a good contract. If they drop out of the race, they're going to wait till next year to trade Staal. I'd be pissed if the Flames traded their 1st for Staal.

Agree. Players like Stone rarely come around. The acquisition of Stone on a long term deal would have provided the opportunity to change the fortunes of the Flames for years to come.
