Leicester had more leverage than Ajax. Maguire is signed for longer, he's English, United were desperate. Leicester now gonna probably blow all that money on mediocre players though.

I get this to an extent, but De Ligt had 2 years left not 1 and is twice the player Maguire is.

Again, as Diane pointed out, they have to pay:
- Englishman Tax
- English International Tax
- Within their League Tax
- Manchester United Tax
It adds up.

Haha, that's so ridiculous. I mean Ake is serviceable, but what should he really be worth...say £30-35m tops? God, even typing that seems insane. Maybe £25? I don't know, but things have spiraled out of control. I blame Liverpool for this one.

nah Leicester should have just got a replacement in first. Now there's only 3 days left and clubs know they've just bagged 80m ... so they'll have to overpay in any case. I guess in a market where Mings and Webster go for 20m Ake is easily worth 40-50m, but Bournemouth obviously don't want to sell him at this point so they come out with the 75m thing to scare them away.

I guess the issue must be needing someone homegrown? I confess, I don't know exactly how that works or what the numbers are. I just know that it comes up for Spurs and that players like Eric Dier don't qualify because he was in Portugal too much, but maybe Ake spent the right years in Engalnd to still qualify?

yeah Ake counts as homegrown. Not an issue for Leicester though, evan after selling Maguire they still have 11 homegrown players (Albrighton, Chilwell, Evans, Gray, James, Maddison, Morgan, Schmeichel, Simpson, Vardy, Ward).

Liverpool no doubt play a part in raising market prices, but I don't think paying for quality in Van Dijk and Alisson is the problem. Those guys are the best at what they do and are easily worth their prices. It's years of overspending on average players like Carroll, Downing, Adam and so on that really cause the problem.

I was mostly joking. I do think VVD is overrated (I mean the fact he was alongside Ronaldo and Messi is just laughable to me), but I'm obviously completely biased. At the same time though, you can't really argue with results. They spent what seemed like an insane amount of money on those two, but it worked. So while it jacked up prices (sort of), who cares? One year like they just had more than pays for it and so financially it just makes sense.
And really, just because one Spurs fan here thinks that VVD is overrated, what does it even matter. He probably made them piles of cash this year, so it is what it is.

Not the problem, but van dijk raised the price on defenders to where it probably should be, if he were to leave now his price would likely be 110-130
So comparing maguire to him is a bit unfair, not only for the reasons Locke summarized above, but for the fact that pre VVD to liverpool, maguire is maybe a 40-50m buy

Van Dijk raising the financial bar is kind of interesting because while there's no doubt at all he's terrific, he seems to be getting credit for single handily elevating Liverpool to their current level. Alisson not getting anywhere near the respect I think, Van Dijk with Karius or Mignolet is the same old, same old.

Lucky, lucky....
Quote:
Manchester United may have suffered a nightmare Premier League campaign last season, but according to the latest edition of ESPN's Luck Index, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side were actually fortunate on several occasions and should have finished even lower than sixth.
United would have been four points worse off without their good fortune and ended the season in seventh place behind Everton, who were found to be the unluckiest side in the league last term.
Liverpool's title chances were not affected by fortune with their post-Luck Index point total unwavering at 97.
Last year's edition of the Luck Index showed that United were fortunate, too, and should have finished with six points fewer, as they were named the luckiest team of the 2017-18 Premier League campaign.

Luckiest team two years in a row....is there something rotten in the State of Denmark?

Sounds like Arsenal might get Coutinho on loan. For a team with no money they're having a pretty nice window. Of course every game will be 5-4 with that defense, but they'll be entertaining.

Apparently with the arrival of Fernandez, Levy is trying to liquidate Erikson on United.
Thinking, it’s a leverage ploy wth Perez.
