Still, if the owner of an NHL team cant scrape 20 mil together... you probably dont want to be on that team going forward anyway.

I wonder how often Offer Sheets are presented to RFA’s, but aren’t signed.
100:1?

FWIW, the early feeling around the hockey industry is that Carolina is certain to match Montreal's Sebastian Aho offer sheet. Which is the main reason we so rarely see them.

Maybe we have all misjudged the market for RFAs this summer? I wouldn't think Aho would sign this if he was convinced he could get a lot more.

This might be obvious, but if Matthew Tkachuk signed a 5 year offer sheet, would he still be an RFA at the end or would he be a UFA?
Are players always UFAs once their offer sheet contracts expire?

Just out of curiosity, could the player signing the offer sheet be traded during the 7 day window to match it? For example if the Canes find it too much for Aho, could they trade him for Monahan(just an example), letting the Flames match the offer sheet.
Makes sense that neither team can trade the player for a year after signing/matching. Just don’t know if it applies to the 7 day window.

Maybe the Habs are doing the Canes a favour.. maybe Aho didn't want to be in Carolina and now has to stay there on a reasonable contract with no power to choose his destination even if he demands a trade.

I like that they offered a lot of dough up front but if the Habs really wanted the player they needed to go bigger as this was a futile offer sheet. This is the kind of offers that accomplish nothing as there's no way the Hurricanes were going to let him for for a 1st round pick.

Players usually enter free agency seven years after signing their ELCs. There are a lot of other rules attached to it, but for Tkachuk he will hit UFA in four years. If he signs for less term than that he would still be RFA, but if he signs for 4+ years he will be UFA.

Not really. Aho wanted a 5 year deal, the Canes were only offering him longer term deals.
This helps Aho more than the Canes.

no, the rights are in flux; technically, montreal owns Aho's rights at this moment and Carolina doesn't. the restricted caveat affords Carolina the right to match the contract.
as far as i know neither team has the ability to move him while his contract is up in the air...and once things are finalized the one year moratorium kicks in
