Stajan helping out on drills makes be happy. He's still so highly regarded by the organization. The right sort of character for being a developmental coach (or more).
I feel the same way. having that guy in the organization just feels right.

You say ‘puts up numbers in the ahl’ As if he’s a seasoned vet but he’s coming off of a very respectable rookie pro season that saw him get better and better as the season wore on. This organization has shown that they are not afraid to find room to graduate players from within the organization who earn the chance at a look and while the cards are stacked against him I feel like his skill set is special and could push him into a spot if he forces hands at main camp. The guy has been battling all the naysayers and doubters his whole career and is a competitive player not afraid to go to areas where you score points; I’m rooting for him big time New Era that’s all.
Have there just been no updates from CP’ers at the sessions, or did I miss it? Usually Caged Great and others have massive updates that have been amazing. Nothing as far as I can see this year.
Sorry about that. I have been both under the weather this week and having copious amounts of yard work to do at the same time after getting home from being at C.O.P..
I will be doing a more significant write up of each of our players after the scrimmage. It was difficult to gauge things as today was really the first day that was more normal in terms of being able to actually evaluate players on their skills.
A couple days ago, it was baseline testing where it was entirely how they skated. Not really able to glean much from that. Yesterday was slightly more normal and today was normal. It was more a lack of total data than anything. Figure with 1 more day's worth of data to go + having all sorts of "fun" digging up clay to plant trees and bushes, that it was easier to go through it all at once.
There are three guys in the camp among the skaters that I'd lean more towards the will play in the NHL column based off what I've watched. Matthew Phillips, Jakob Pelletier, and Mathias Emilio Pettersen.
MEP is the best player in terms of current talent, only slightly besting Phillips. Pelletier has a high level of upside as well. I could see MEP becoming an impact player at the NHL level if he keeps going. It is insane that he fell to the sixth. In a re-draft he goes in the 1st.

He’d need to be at or around a PPG pace in the AHL this year to project as an NHLer, considering his size and potential role, no?

That seems like a solid bet.
20-year-old rookie pro Matthew Phillips scored 38 pts in 65 AHL games last year. In his rookie season 20-year-old Andrew Mangiapane scored 41 pts in 66 games, and then followed that up with 46 pts in 38 games in his second year. Mangiapane is now a NHL player.

I’m certainly not betting against him! ... I’ll be happy even with a .8+ ppg this season, if he could follow it up with a 1.0+ppg next season

Darren Haynes @DarrenWHaynes
Chatted with Dmitry Zavgorodniy today, who is limited to watching the on-ice portion of dev camp in street clothes. His upper-body injury also impacted his second half. Plans to again spend the entire summer in Calgary. Likes it here. Says there’s way more to do than in Rimouski.

I wouldn't write Phillips off either. He has some serious offensive talent, and I actually think a player like him can benefit from playing with other talented players.
Beyond his height, you can't really compare Mangiapane with him. Mangiapane has that bit of snarl in his game, and that allows him to be an effective checker in the NHL. He is a much 'stronger on his skates' type than Phillips, and seems to enjoy playing physically. It was a much easier path for Mangiapane to find a spot in the NHL than it will be for Phillips, as Phillips will need to find a spot where he can be utilized to help generate offence more.
Pelletier was a great draft pick because he is so good + he is so tenacious and willing to play physically. I think he will be in the NHL in less than 3 seasons, if everything goes as expected.
So the Flames are a small, under-sized team. So? Skilled players find a way to score and contribute as opposing teams are trying to zero-in on them and negate their skill. The undersized skilled players that manage to flourish even through this attention will graduate to the NHL and hopefully flourish there as well.
I want the Flames to get bigger, but this team needs to remain fast and skilled. They need to keep improving their depth in terms of skill in order to help push this team forward. Flames lost 4 straight in the playoffs because Colorado figured out how to neutralize all but one line - the Mangiapane, Ryan and Hathaway line. Only one player on that line was "NHL- Sized". The other two players on that line played tenaciously. They didn't give on pucks and plays. They didn't play rattled. That's why that line was fantastic.
The other 3 lines rolled over being tentative, or even out-right being rattled. They stopped making good passes consistently, they bobbled things all over the ice. They all had outstanding moments during the playoffs, but none of the top 3 lines consistently looked strong.
You can always trade some highly skilled players for other players with some size, but lower skill. Big guys that can skate are always going to be valuable, and I am sure that the Flames always try to draft and sign these types as well. I think that the Flames are more interested in trying to become the most skilled hockey team that they can, and will look to balance out this lack of physicality where possible, hence the off-season's rumours thus far.

Pettersen just scored a very nice shootout goal. Very similar to Foo's beauty a couple years ago. Working on uploading, it was at the far end so not amazing quality.
For reference, here's Foo's goal
