Gaudreau avoids contact more than Elijah Price.

He does. And the Avs know it. Heck he shys away from it so quickly they just need to slightly pressure him (they dont even need to touch him at this point) and he dishes/coughs the puck up.

I don’t want to trade Johnny but if they were thinking about it Point would be my target. He would probably sign a 8 year deal in Calgary and would take over as our number 1C that would could pair with Tkachuk. Build the second line around Monahan.

Package Janko and Brodie for a winger.

I wouldn’t want to trade Johnny until he is closer to UFA and refuse to sign an extension but if they could get a guy like Point who Tampa is going to struggle to keep them I think I could get behind that trade

Monahan is a second liner. His one elite quality is finishing that's it. We still need a rounded centre for the top line. Only trades i'm making are Brodie our first and Jankowski for a centre that can create more time and space. I dont think we need to blow it up.

We just need to stop deluding ourselves into thinking Johnny and Monahan have chemistry. From zone entries, to creating space to possession in tight games they dont have chemistry at all its just that one guy is an elite passer and one guy is an elite finisher. They click on one aspect of the game thats it. You could have Lindholm or Neal tap in pucks to fill that role but we need somebody rounded that helps in other areas for the first line centre spot. P Kane had Toews. We dont need to change the type of player Johnny is we just need someone that compliments him more.

What we have
L1: [Gaudreau (Skilled Playmaker)] [Monahan (Skilled Finisher)] [Lindholm (Skilled Two-Way)]
L2: [Tkachuk (Skilled Power Forward)] [Backlund (Skilled Two-Way)] [Frolik (Two-Way)]

What I think we need
L1: [Gaudreau (Skilled Playmaker)] [?? (Skilled Power Forward)] [Lindholm (Skilled Two-Way)]
L2: [Tkachuk (Skilled Power Forward)] [Backlund (Skilled Two-Way)] [?? (Skilled Finisher)]

A current possibility
L1: [Gaudreau (Skilled Playmaker)] [Lindholm (Skilled Two-Way)] [Tkachuk (Skilled Power Forward)]
L2: [Mangiapane (Two-Way)] [Monahan (Skilled Finisher)] [Bennett (Skilled Power Forward)]
(Other two lines)
L3: [Neal (Power Forward)] [Backlund (Skilled Two-Way)] [Frolik (Two-Way)]
L4: [Hathaway (Utility)] [Ryan (Skilled Two-Way)] [Jankowski (Utility)]

trade Brodie in a deal for Kadri. there's your sandpaper 30-goal-scoring guy to play with Gaudreau

Gaudreau - Kadri - Lindholm
Tkachuk - Monahan - Bennett
Dube - Ryan - Mangiapane
Hathaway - Jankowski - Neal

Interesting, what would it take to get Sean Couturier? He is now 26, it seems like the Flyers be on a younger timeline than the Flames?

I'm all for Treliving trying to swap Gaudreau for Hall. It's likely welcomed by both players, Calgary gets size while NJ gets a local star to build hype around in addition to Hughes, and if worst comes to worst at least with Hall the Flames could likely draft first overall for the first time in franchise history

Please no Kadri!
Although for Brodie would be a good deal, he wouldn't be the answer.

Except now you have a roster hole to fill in the playoffs when he inevitably gets suspended for a whole round

How soon we forget. I understand that supposedly it's more difficult to play in the playoffs but come on, the 1st line hasn't been a shadow of themselves since the AS break.

So no, they haven't been playing poorly due to more pressure cause they were already playing poorly.

Even in the AS game, Johnny didn't seem to be himself.

I guess once season is over, we will know if him or Sean had some kind of health issue.

Who knows, maybe they were sued by Gatorade cause now they only sell the purple drank!

With the way Matt Duchene is playing. I wonder if he'd consider signing here. At least we know he could keep up with the play and actually back check with more regularity. Then trade Monahan for an elite power forward with the potential to score 40-50 on consistent basis. Maybe Monahan + for Stamkos, Tampa fans seem to be fed up with his poor playoff performances over the years.

You have to think he'd learn at some point. Of course, that's what the Flames' pro scouts would have to consider. I think Duchene would also make a ton of sense.

Why would the Flames have to trade Monahan if they brought in another center? The $6.375M he earns is fine for a number 2 center.

See what you could get for Jankowski before moving a consistent 30 goal guy signed to a good deal for 4 more years.

I'll take your question seriously, if you want the real issue, we need a bonafide number 1 centre. We can't have an undersized, albeit hyper skilled winger carrying the rest of our first line. We can get away with it most of a regular season, but that doesn't fly in the playoffs.

We've seen a handful of times how good Gaudreau can be in big games if he's got a true star centre, see when he played with MacKinnon at the World Cup for just one example. I love Monahan, but I don't think he's got the qualities to hang with the league's best centres, and in order to get the best out of Gaudreau in crunch time, and for that matter Lindholm we need exactly that.

i think calgary could go the offer sheet route; guys like a Johnsson or Kapanen from the Leafs might fall into a salary range that is palatable.

if the Flames get ousted (likely) i think BT will look hard at everything, including offer sheets for the right player
