Depends on the extension. If Vegas is fine giving him Tavares money, good for them. For the Flames that'd mean bye bye Mr Tkachuk

Yeah without a 1st involved I might have pulled the trigger on this if I were Calgary... Brannstrom looks promising but who knows if he will pan out. I think Ottawa got hosed.

At the end of the day, if Neal comes back and regains a bit of his scoring touch and continues to get it back by the playoffs. That's a massive add to our lineup.

Lets roll with this group. They got us in 2nd place in the NHL and are already blowing off the expectations off the barn doors.

IMO the Flames should have been all over this. I am very disappointed
All over trading Valimaki for a rental? Some of you get too caught up in the deadline day stuff that's largely been a boon to sellers, TSN and RSN. Only one team is going to win the cup and a bunch of picks and prospects have been traded over the past week for nothing.

Lol, so true. The biggest fear around here a few days back was upsetting the chemistry of a 1st place team and not selling our future up the river because we've given away picks and prospects before.

Today it's all about how could we not give away our best prospect for a player that's going to eat up significant cap on an extension to boot.

This is probably a pretty significant component. I know which city I'd choose to extend in and it's not here.

It would be different if Vegas was trash, but they're not.

I'm pretty fine with this. The contract is likely going to be disgusting.

When Valimaki emerges as a top pairing d-man, you'll all be glad Tre didn't move him.

If Stone signs for anything more than 9mil/5 I will be fine that we passed.

My guess is this actually may have broken down at contract talks.

If the contract is $9M+ on AAV then my guess is the Flames backed away at that point.

Edit: And there it is Mackenzie reporting extension is 8 years at $9M+ for Stone - guarantee that where the Flames backed away.

Valimaki, I think. I would say Valimaki's a more complete defenceman.

Matter of opinion - I would say value wise they are similar.
So it came down to that. Pretty clearly.

yes, time will tell. disappointing, especially since he's going to be in the division and sounds like he will sign for a long time

I'm not sure how the Flames could have made a contract work with Tkachuk getting a big raise. A few players like Frolik and Brodie would have to be moved out for picks/prospects and then there's the goaltending issue that also needs to be resolved.

Must say I am disappointed if that is all it took to get Stone.

The objective in the NHL is to win the Stanley Cup and if you have a special team, then I am of the mindset, you do what you can to make that happen now.

It is pretty well known what kind of player Stone is but it is only projections for what we think Valimaki and Kylington will bring in the future. I would have given up one of the two to get Stone.

Stone has agreed to an extension but not signed, since he is on the phone with Duthie!

Valimaki, much bigger, way better in his own end, top pair is his ceiling. Some of you guys really don’t get that this guy is legit. He carried Tri City last season in the playoffs. Dominated almost every game. Held his own as a 20 year old Dman in the NHL and is doing very well in the AHL.

An important consideration is also that Valimaki will be on an ELC for a few more years, thus extending the window. Adding a huge cap hit like Stone would shorten the Flames window by alot.

There’s only so many spots on D. Hanafin, Andersson, Kylington, Valimaki, Hamonic, Brodie. Can’t keep/pay them all. While I love Valimaki I would have been willing to part with him today assuming a reasonable extension could have been reached.
