Speaking of which... will this be a Gillies start tomorrow? With the time off, Smith could take over if the AHL stats are something to be concerned with... or a boost of confidence that some help for Rittich could be in the system if this Smith loses his way
I'd have to think Smith gets the start. He hasn't been overworked and I can't imagine their is a lot of faith in Gillies
I'd still like to know how the guy ever had a total of just 17 goals for a career high, and why they ever wanted to trade a player that has been such a fantastic 2-way player for the Flames this year. Why did it not work in Carolina? It's really quite unbelievable that he just always hasn't always been this good, massive numbers from playing on the top line notwithstanding.
Great question. Peters has said he was used in more of a shutdown role but that doesn’t totally explain his crazy jump in production.
It’s definitely due in part to his linemates. But obviously the guy has taken a massive step this year.
Could you imagine if this was a contract year for him? All the talk would be how much credit to give his linemates.
Shaky first against a determined Detroit team who played to the best of their ability, but Flames acquitted themselves well. Smith was solid overall, which is an encouraging sign. They gave up way too many odd-man chances and got caught on the wrong side when on defence and were it against a better team they would have gotten burned.
Johnny Hockey is all world right now, amazing to watch every game. good that they got the job done, happy that Brodie scored in front of a home crowd. need a tighter defensive effort against the bruins.
Their "starter" Rittich is out with LBI tonight. Smith, 37 in March, sucks this year...perfect trade scenario for Howard $5.3...We'll take their 1st & cap dump Mike Smith $5.67 UFA.
The 26-year-old’s .920 save percentage and 2.39 goals-against average have steadied the Flames’ season, helping to mitigate the uneven play from assumed starter Mike Smith (.888 save percentage, 3.00 goals-against average), meaning a prolonged absence for the Czech netminder could throw a significant wrench into Calgary’s 2019 plans.
Gillies has suited up for 22 games as the Heat’s starter this season, posting an .864 save percentage and 4.07 goals-against average in that span.
Quote:
we should ask for a 1st & 4th, since cap dump Mike Smith is more $5.67 which gives them ~370,000 additional cap space onto their current ~ $700K+
Quote:
Honestly, I'd retain up to what I could on Howard for them too. I mean, we're not going to be adding at the TDL, so we don't have any need for any free cap space we have. I haven't Capfriendly'd it, but if you could retain $1M on Howard and still be under the cap with taking Smith at 100%, Calgary would be even more likely to shell out the kicker pick.

Looks like Helm got hand transplants during his injury

That can't be Helm -- that man has hands

That's like a few times now the flames have left a man really late behind the play to wait for the turnover.

And it's tied. So it goes

I guess Hronek will learn to..

It would be funnier

Young Hronek has much to learn.

Hronek defensively isn't ready. I wanna like the guy.

I knew lil Johnny would complain to the ref. Biggest complainer in the league

I think McDavid's gotta start pulling a Johnny ***** Boy and starting screaming at the refs when they **** up on their embarrassing non-calls with him. Gaudreau seems to usually get some preferential treatment after he does his whining and glove flicks after slashes.

Now that Johnny is 1 point ahead of McSowonderful, I'm sure the league will somehow manufacture a couple of second assists for him tonight, unless his team got shutout.

If it wasn't clear before, it's abundantly clear now, Treliving (and co) are playing chess while the rest of the league plays checkers. Not only did they get a secret agent to dismantle an opponent from within (Chiarelli of course) they played the long con where Peters was set to come to Calgary years ago, so he downplayed Zebulon and Hanifin in his tenure with Carolina so that when his contract option came up, he jumped ship to Calgary and brought his best, "underperforming" players with him, Tre just had to pull the easy trigger.

Mike Illitch really has passed. For 20 years, the Flames or any other team in tight games in the third, and it's the Wings getting pps mid 3rd period was something you could set your watch to.

This team is playing great and is tied for 2nd in the league with Toronto, who is also playing unbelievable hockey. Crazier still, both teams are as many points from first as they are from being out of the playoffs. Insane
