Fantastic deal for the Flames. BT hits another home run out of the park and puts the team in a good position moving forward. Deals like this are proof why you don't just sign a player to a contract to ''get it done''. You take your time and find a deal that works out best for both sides and gives the team wiggle room.
Hanafin's ceiling is sky high. If he even comes close to reaching it, this will be an absolute steal, and still leaves him young enough to cash in as a UFA at age 27.

Another great contract by Treliving. I was expecting this to come in somewhere in the 5-5.5 range. Cant wait for the season to start.

It's a lot of dough though for a guy who hasn't really 'proven it' yet. I like the deal, but acknowledge that there is a fair bit of risk taken here by the Flames.

Yes Hannifin could get more going year to year or signing a longer term, but that would likely affect his next contract.
This way Hannifin gets the best of both worlds. Adding two more years would have cost the Flames dearly, as it would have placed Hanifin in a less desirable position for his next contract.
This is an excellent deal for both sides.

Hanifin signed for only one year less than the maximum he was allowed

Great contract Treliving.
Now re-sign Tkachuk, sign a goalie (Lehtonen) to a PTO and trade Stone.

I think this is right in the wheelhouse of what he should be making. Hard for me to say it's a fantastic deal or a steal by BT given the circumstances and fact Hanafin still has much to prove, but another solid contract nonetheless. Could end up being a very big bargain.

I like the player, and he has been progressing every season. Chances are this is a budget contract down the road. But paying relatively unproven players a bunch of money has been the Oilers recipe for "success".
I think a 2 year prove it deal would have been the safer contract that left some incentive on the board. Plus, the next contract would have bought more UFA years if things turned out.
|
I understand the thinking here but for a guy this young with as much potential as he has, a bridge deal would have been a huge mistake imo. The fourth season is typically when defencemen have their breakout seasons offensively so chances are after a two-year bridge deal, Hanifin would have two 40-50 point seasons under his belt and all of a sudden be worth 7+mil per year instead of just under five.

A lot of money for a d-man who played 18:52 per game last year.
Noah Hanifin's $4.95M AAV represents the 26th highest cap hit among left handed defensemen for the 2018-19 season.

Next year is going to be interesting, the only large ticket UFA is Smith at $4.25m. we might be in small a pickle with a Tkachuk and Bennett extension.
Since we'll need a goalie who's the high salary player leaving?
|
I don't see next year as a problem at all. Sources of cap space at their disposal, in order of likelihood IMO:
1) the cap will go up, probably $2 - $3M (as usual)
2) Smith, as a 37 year old UFA, re-signs for significantly less (maybe $2.5-3M range?)
3) Stone - by next year, Andersson and/or Vlaimaki have (hopefully) replaced him
4) Frolik - if Bennett takes a big step and needs to get paid, then Frolik becomes expendable (if Bennett doesn't take a big step, they won't need to move Frolik, so it works either way)
Lots of options.

I’m interested to see what Morrissey, Theodore and Nurse sign for. To some extent, I think those contracts will allow us to evaluate how well Treliving did, even though I’m sure Hanifin’s contract will influence the other three contracts (I wonder if signing Hanifin first could have been a strategic consideration if he thought those other 3 would sign for more).

Where would you rank Hanifin compared to the other 3 ? They are all good players but pretty sure that Hanifin would be #4 on most analysts ranking of players.
If Nurse/Morrissey/Theodore sign the same contract as Hanifin it would be considered as a hometown discount.

2.59 M left for capspace. That's a comfortable number. It doesnt feel like the Flames are wasting room and it leaves some flexibility If they want to trade at the deadline.

How do the Draisaitl and Lucic contracts rank, Mr. Staples?
Hopkins? Russell?
What about Hamonic for $3.8 for two more seasons?
In short, suck a D*&K Staples!

Wonder what Staples will say about Nurse's deal.... "We got him for 3 mill instead of 4.95, and there is a good chance we only wanted him for 1 year anyways".

Probably:
Morrissey
Theodore
Nurse
Hanifin
It’s really apples and oranges though, I think you’d have to compare 2021-21 Hanifin to 2018-19 Morrissey, Theodore and Nurse to get a proper read. Also, I don’t know enough about Morrissey, Theodore and Nurse to properly evaluate them.

I like how Staples bases his evaluation of the contract on minutes played, not skill, points, defensive ability, possession etc.
And it’s indicative of how Edmonton rates their young players. Play them way more minutes than they can handle or deserve and then give them huge contracts because their big minutes makes them invaluable with no consideration given to earning that ice time.
Not to mention the fact Hanifin is a kid and Peters no doubt sheltered his minutes in Carolina. His minutes will certainly increase this season.

I wonder how many GMs were waiting for Brad to make a deal first so that they could use his negotiating work as a comparable? He's got a rep for keeping deals realistic and team friendly

Straight up, what's a Hanifin/Nurse trade look like?
Honest question.
